LOL, 6 months later & someone took my advice. Here's the original info on using a 16x PCIe card in a 1x slot.

This gives me an idea for a business opportunity. Buy up cheap-ass PCI-E x16 cards, chop them down to x1, and sell them for a profit, since x1 cards are kind of rare and expensive.
