I just tried the command (edit: to get the 32 bit libraries) and see that some of them come from 'main' and some of them come from 'universe' so I think we're golden as soon as that source is enabled.

biodoc.... you got the 32-bit libraries with the normal update? (Mine didn't update because I didn't install.... just running from the disk long enough to get my terminology straight.

Also, when the very first splash screen came up, I hit F6 like you suggested. I got a (partial) line of test and did see the words quiet splash in it. What do you do after hitting F6? (It is running fine with doing nothing here.... lucky for me! and a 7950GT :) )

-Sid

When I ran Ubuntu, I finally got the Nvidia drivers to work (3D), it took WEEKS of headaches and at least 3 dozen different methods sworn to by various linux forum posters, google searches, etc.... never again. :(

The 32 bit libraries did not come with the normal update...have to download and install with the command you posted above.

After F6, I deleted the "quiet splash" and then hit return (this was necessary to prevent a lockup on my machine).

Thanks biodoc!

With any luck, on Friday evening I'll have a new install of Ubuntu (just until my kid brings me home a copy of XP from school) running on a new 'pooter. Your help is definitely going to be part of that!

OK, After all my problems on Intel boxes, I am up to 64% done on my old dinosaur dual 248 Opterons witha Radeon 9000 video card ! I will be getting back an asking about the SMP client setup (if its not documented here) I need SMP for ubuntu for dummies !

Edit: Installed and crunching am SMP unit ! I will update with how long it takes for each step.

okay results are in.
x2 4200+ (s939) o/c to 2.81ghz
project 2653
win xp smp = 23min 30sec / frame or ~1080ppd
VMware Ubuntu 64bit = 25min 0 sec / frame or ~1010ppd

also the VMware was locking up, probably because of high O/C.

:(

At least I learnt alot in teh process. It's also handy knowledge for when I get a yorkfield.

OK, I am not sure yet, but it looks like it is doing 24 min/step for a 2.2 ghz Opteron ! Thats the same as a 2.8 4200 under XP ?????

Not bad....I have another machine now. Maybe I will try to install to the Opteron 170 next (@2.5)

The x2 4200+ only has 2x512KB of L2 cache, thats why the Opteron's go much better! the x2 4400+ has 2x 1mb L2 cache which are much better for folding. They just happen to be to expensive and hard to find in Australia when i was looking around for a cheap upgrade.

The yorkfield benchies look promising (2x 6mb of cache). QX6500 on air at 4ghz with 2x vmware linux smp clients generating over 5,500ppd! Link http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=535825&page=2 the only problem is the price!

I think the jury's still out with ubuntu vs windows (PPD) but ubuntu is a very stable OS for a dedicated crunching box:)

Well, by win2k box with X2 4400 @2.5 (one meg cache also) does 28 min/step, but the Opteron 248's @2.2 are 24 minutes ? I say ubuntu wins easy.

I'm happy with my rig running 2 x SMP clients (12 min 40 sec each=4200 PPD)
Q6600@3GHz
ASUS P5K-VM
unbuntu 64bit 7.1

Now, if I just had 4 more of these:D

Thats some nice numbers. mine can only crunch on average every 19 minutes for 2xSMP. My board will not let me OC. :(

Well, I now have it on 2 systems. A dual Opteron 248 system, and an X2 Opteron 170 system. The 170 does it in 21 minutes ! Still can't compete with a C2D@3.2 in 14 minutes.....

Well, not really. It works painlessly on my Dual Opyeron 248's and my Opteron 170, but all my Intel systems (with the same video card even) just locks up ! And all of these are F@H stable, which we all know is clocked lower than a regular OC stable !

Edit: I just got a Q6600 system installed, and I wil have 2 smp clients running....3000 up to 4400 PPD maybe, and its at 3420, so does that mean I will get more than 4400 ppd ??

OK, I got it done on a Q6600@3420, running two smp clients, each @ 11 minutes (well, 11:05 and 10:56, close enough), and I calculate that 1.3 2653's x 2 each day, or 4576 PPD.
