Just do some experimenting. raise your voltage a notch and keep an eye on temps, anything over 85c load is getting too hot. Then check for stability.
You should be able to do 1.125v safely.

You are 185 core over stock now, which faster then a 5850.:)
You should do 900 core easily with a small bump in voltage.

Thanks for your contribution.

Just curious, and because I'm too lazy to start my own thread or place this where it is more appropriate, why don't the newer generation cards crash a lot more easily than before?

I remember overclocking a 7800GTX around 40% and you could barely tell what was going on the screen with all the artifacts. Nowadays the driver just crashes without any graphical anomolies. Is it due to how much more complex the drivers are, and some values actually need to be accurate?

It only makes sense that since GTX460 @ 850mhz GPU is about as fast as the GTX470, then an overclocked GTX470 will be faster. I would imagine a 917 mhz GTX460 will be about as fast as a 750 mhz GTX470: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/revie...eview-temps-noise-power-and-overclocking.html

A GTX460 will run quieter and consume less power.

Actually the article i originally posted shows the other cards overclocked as well. You do have to go throught there original acticles on other cards to see how far they overclocked though.

In the original article I posted the gtx 470's overclock was 762 and the 5850 was 890.

Quick Update:

Decided to go for it and up the core voltage to 1.1mV, but for some reason it's capped at 1.087mV and won't go any higher. The increased voltage allowed me to push the card to 900|1800|2000, however it crashes 2 minutes into FurMark's stability test. I then tested the overclock using Kombustor and after 10 minutes there are no problems. 10 minutes of Crysis gameplay also show no artifacts or instability, so I guess it's stable only if I stay away from FurMark stress tests. Temperature increased in Furmark to 75C before crashing, but temperatures in Kombustor and Crysis stayed in the 50s.

So is it alright to keep the overclock at these speeds or should I lower them a bit (890MHz is completely stable)? Keeping them at these speeds would mean that the Gigabyte 1GB card hit the 900 mark and that this card is a champ!

Psh, it's Fermi, 85c is nothing. :p But yeah, wooohoo, nvidia is back in the game with the 460 for sure. Though lets be fair here, 470's and 480's can be overclocking monsters as well. Just use that custom fan profile and be careful, lol.

Try this to unlock your voltage limit and build your own database specifically for you card.

1. Edit MSIAfterburner.cfg
2. Change AllowCaptureVoltageDefaults from 0 to 1
3. Run Kombustor in windowed mode
4. Press <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Shift> + <V> to capture voltage
5. Done!

No apparently it's not a software limit but built into the hardware so you'll have to hard mod the card to go higher...at least that's what was said in one of the XS threads.

Now that would suck.

From what I can google up , most cards are doing 900+ core with voltage set at 1.087. Stock voltage seems to be good for 830+ core.
900 core = 470 gtx
800 core= 5850
Give or take a few%

So its just about a garauntee to overclock past 5850 speeds and with some voltage= a gtx470.

It might be a bios limitation.?
Thanks

My mobo has a PCI-E overvoltage option and I set it to +0.1V. However, it doesn't look like it effects my core voltage nor does it allow me to set it higher. Unfortunately, this definitely looks like a hardware limitation. Anyone else with a GTX 460 card having this problem?

I was referring to your gtx 460 bios. :)

Sometimes you can change the voltage in the gpu bios.

Techpowerup review site has all the info you need in that department.

I have the Palit Sonic Platinum and Afterburner wont go any higher than 1.087 either. However, the card runs at 950/1100 all day playing BFBC2 at 1.050. I played a good 2 hours straight but will have to try Furmark to really stress it. Temps are ~73 celsius, fan ramps up to 70%.

I had a Reference ASUS 5850 in the same computer which would clock a little over 5870 clocks at stock voltage and I can say the GTX460 at the numbers I am running at give me more FPS than the 5850 @ 5870 clocks. This is just eyeing it with FRAPS, hardly a perfect test but looks to be about 8-10 FPS more. The 5850 would sit at low 60's FPS while the 460 is at low 70's FPS. Running 1920 x 1200, 4 x AA, all settings maxed and HBAO off.

I was a bit concerned with Palit and the VRM heatsink fiasco but the numbers this card churns out are really a surprise. The 460 is about 3/4 the size of the 5850 and about 1/2 the weight, it looked like a joke side by side but size doesn't matter i guess. :)

I read that Palit sent out a new bios for my card but have to do some reading up on it.

What is the max overclock? You might be the first to reach 1000 core!
Thanks for the information and thats one mean overclocker you have there.

Just did a quick 20 minutes of BFBC2. It wouldnt do 1000/1100 but would do 1000/1000 at 1.087. Temps reached 76 celsius and it didnt crash but 20 minutes is not exactly considered stable....

What can I use to monitor and log while Im playing that will show the numbers? Ive never used Afterburner before. Thanks.

Happy: I would highly recommend you open up another thread solely dedicated for people to post their 460 overclocks. This thread may get long and unwieldy with actual overclocks scattered throughout and you having to repeat yourself regarding how to overclock/test stability many times.

You'll have my SLI scores soon enough.

try Gpu-z ,but I doubt it's updated for the gtx460. edit : it does support gtx 460's

I'm afraid they might ban me if I open another thread. :) J/K

ok , I'm on a crappy net book,I'll do it when I get on my main rig.

Can't wait to see them scores. Thanks
