woohooo.. up to 3.8%.. so close to EmigrantDirect.. Emigrant gave me such a hard time setting up their account.. having to send in a check, not a starter check.. pffft..

ING was all online.. much better customer service too

Take account opening for example, I was up and running in 2-3 days with ING. With both Emigrant and HSBC, it took about a month to get account ready (both places requires mailing of password and acct # separately thru snail mail and re-opening an account after the initial online application).

And after jumping thru all the hoops in opening HSBC, you have to do it again in order to link checking acct and begin transfering money (wait for another set of deopsit verification).

But 4.25-3.8 = .45%, so in the end money wins!

do they pay out interest every month like ING? i signed up for an account, and have money in it...but i show $0 in interest accrued

Is that FDIC insured? Also, have heard bad things about PayPal locking your account.

Since PayPal isn't a real bank they're not FDIC insured. However, PayPal does keep your funds in various FDIC insured banks, so if those banks go belly up, you're protected. But if PayPal goes belly up, you're not.

EDIT........

More info available at PayPal

Yes they do. It's different than ING, which pays you the interest at the end of each month. HSBC gives you interest every month on your sign-up date. ie. sign up on the 18th and you see your interest on the 18th of the next month. At least that's how it's been for me the first two months.

Anyone can also PM me if they need a referral. I love ING! =p

Kicking myself for not finding out about this earlier. feel so stupid with 1/2 of 1% in my regular checking account. So 3.8% is great. And the interface is so simple.

Read the thread link below. There are a few posts where people are claiming they are getting 25.00 when the apply. Bit confusing, but the thread's not too long so maybe you can get in on it.

HSBC thread

From what I heard HSBC is really slow and invasive in setting up the account. And their Indian phone customer service is not that great. But once it's up it should be all right.

Anybody can also shoot me a PM for ING referrals. ING pays out really fast. :)

I received all my account information in under 10 days with HSBC. This was around Christmas time too so I assumed it would be a couple of days longer than usual.

Also I've dealt with their phone customer service several times and they've been very cordial and professional at all times, they returned phone calls when they said they would. Normally I wouldnt gush, but I dealt with TD Waterhouse customer service for so long that I expect poor service from banks.

Just a word of advice, even if you dont particularily want an ATM card for your savings account you should get one anyway because you'll need it to set up your account so you can transfer funds back and forth between your bank and your HSBC account. If you dont get one everytime you want to link a bank account you'll have to go through a long process with phone customer support.

3.8%, not bad, not the best...but I don't have that much money in my savings account to make a huge difference. Most of my money is being invested in more riskier things.

BTW, i have referals. (i have to mention it in an ING thread ;) )

I e-mail them twice. Once before Thanksgiving and one a few days after. I received no response at all for two weeks after that then I got an automated message that said their e-mail server was backed up and they were trying to play catch up and to look for a response soon. It's now been another two weeks and still no response. So much for customer service.

ING is playing catch-up game. I transferred most of my cash to Emigrant Direct. Also bought some 1 year CDs with netbank when they offered free ipod shuffle which I just received. Cool deal.

Time to ebay my ipod. :)

Yeah, I would have gotten a free ipod but they had to run a hard credit check to open the account which my credit score doesn't like right now.

Sparke,

I don't recall NetBank running a credit check although I don't have credit problems. That's strange. BTW, NetBank CDs for 1 year is at 4.6%

From a previous thread somewhere I read that someone asked them if there was a hard credit check and they said yes. Maybe they didn't go through with it, but I didn't want to take the chance.

Edit - Went back and looked. From a FW thread:

In addition to the terms above, all new accounts are subject to NetBank credit approval, account opening procedures, and standard account terms and disclosures for the account (a higher balance is required to obtain the bonus). Based on account preferences and account activities, service fees or penalties charged against the accounts may reduce earnings. See the Fee Schedule and Truth-in-Savings disclosure for more information.
