Why are infinity screens a thing? What do they do besides making a phone much more fragile than it needs to be?

"Seeing is beliving" really is the easiest and best answer here. Try watching clips like the following on the "Infinity Display" and compare the experience on a traditional flat screen.

The curved display is not for everyone, but you would be hard pressed not to acknowledge how it plays tricks on your eyes with the right contents.

I don't have one to compare. Can you describe this "trick?"

The simplest description is that it creates an illusion that objects on the screen appear closer to your eyes. Along with the other AMOLED characterestics, it gives you a sense that you are actually watching real things instead of blinking pixels.

because far too many people think form > function

and its not just samsung, any 2.5/3d shaped phone is going to be weaker vs a flat face design. and i too wish people would stop doing it. also glass on the back is a stupid as F idea that needs to die

So only stupid people get their phones knocked or accidently pulled from their hands? Man, you guys know how to tout yourselves.
I specifically said "more regularly" to make it clear I wasn't talking about everyone, but you still went ahead and ran with it. Never said stupid either. The people who treat their phones like we're still in the flip phone era drop/break them more often.

You used the word "logically." Hmmm.
Love to know why my use of it is wrong. I have no idea. Ironic if true but happy to hear why.

Also I'm not trying to personally insult you.

Its my belief you'd be just fine with an s9. I don't believe for one second it requires any case that wraps up over the screen edges. That's just needless overkill.

I can understand if you hate the screen edges for aesthetic reasons. But "because it's guaranteed to break!" isn't really a valid reason, IMO.

Put a normal case on an s9 if you must have one and yes, always be careful with the phone as I'd say for any smartphone, and I'd bet anything you'll be fine with it.

And of course get the insurance for the phone. That covers all the other what-if scenarios, same as for any phone, infinity display or not.

You have friends that happen to have cracked the screens on their phones, but we all do.

Whenever I go to my kids school I'm simply stunned at what I consider the 'mommy phone'. Almost every mom I see there has her iPhone wrapped in a brick of bright colored plastic... and the screen cracked to hell and back! Doesn't matter what type of phone ... so many cracked screens, even in those big dumb cases.

The reasons with only the slightest observation becomes apparent: they all dangle their phones about carelessly, let their little kids play with it (my kids mess with my wife's iPhone but they practically have a restraining order to stay 500 feet away from Pop's phone at all times) etc etc.

My fave 'mommy phone' was one lady who uses what I have to guess is just a strip of packaging tape as her 'screen protector'. Almost all of them have terribly applied screen protectors with bubbles and gaps...and various stages of cracks both in the protector and glass under.

Just an astonishing array of the most wretchedly adorned smartphones I personally witness regularly. And my firm belief its their distracted mom behaviors that smash up their phones, not the designs of the phones themselves.

Heh, my two-year-old is always going for mom's phone, but if he ever sees mine laying about, he picks it up and brings it right to me to put in my pocket. Taught him well lol.

I can't like nice hardware because I'm cautious?
I didn't call you any of those names. I have a Note 8 and I'm very cautious, so yes you can have nice hardware, but I also treat my phone with care and concern. I don't have a case and I have a skin only because I like the way it looks.

I've broken exactly one phone from being careless and I stopped being careless.

Between 2 days ago and now the turn in offer for the plain S7 went from $300 to $200. It's no longer worth it to me. My required specs don't seem to exist

Dude, your awesomeness is undeniable. Although your phone smarts wasn't the question, you occupy an elevated eshelon in the mobile device world. Bravo.

Another benefit of curved sides is ergonomics and screen real estate.

I'm indifferent. I love my Note 4's flat display and my Note 8's display. The Infinity Display looks cool, but I do not utilize any features for it.

Only con I can think of is screen protectors being more difficult to apply on a curved screen, but it isn't impossible.

I'm fine with Samsung using them on their flagships (though I'm ambivalent to them) as it simply gives users choice. You don't like it? Get a Pixel, HTC, LG, or any number of devices with flat screens. It would be even more boring than today if everyone had identical looking devices.
