Infant Daughter Dies as Parents Play Online Game

A thoughtless couple in their 20s who left their four-month old daughter at home while they played Internet computer games at a nearby PC café have been booked by police after the child died.

According to Incheon Police Station on Tuesday, a 29-year-old man husband identified by his family name of Yu and his wife put their four-month daughter in the bedroom of their home and went to a neighborhood PC café at around 4:00 p.m. on May 24 to play the online game "World of Warcraft.

Time flew by as the couple lost themselves in the game, and when they returned home at 9:00 p.m., their daughter was lying on her stomach, dead of suffication.

The couple told police, "We were thinking of playing for just an hour or two and returning home like usual, but the game took longer that day."

Police said an investigation turned up that the couple, who wed last year, used to play "World of Warcraft" whenever they had time.

Police said, "It's unfortunate, because the tragedy could have been averted if the couple had just left their daughter with Yu's mother-in-law, who lived upstairs from them... We booked the pair on criminal charges, judging that when you consider the situation, they were responsible for their daughter's death."

Major U.S. online game producer Blizzard, which grew famous with the game "Starcraft", produced the game to which Yu and his wife were addicted, "World of Warcraft." The game allows multiple players to form teams to fight battles and enjoy various adventures.

Forget WoW, those parents must be completely retarded to leave a four-month old at home alone, even for just an hour or two.

Sad, but relatively unrelated to WoW, or video games. S.I.D.S. and child suffocation is a very real issue that can happen to even the most attentive of parents, unfortunately.

Still, you don't leave your infant unattended for hours at a time. :|

Stupid people shouldn't breed. I don't know how any person in their right mind could leave a baby alone like that for five minute let alone "a couple of hours" that stretched into several hours. Hope the couple gets the book thrown at them and they do jail time.

My wife and I always had our son within our sight his first couple of years.

oh boy ... we have a 10 month old and we both watch him like a hawk 24h but he still manages to bump his head pretty hard or hit ledges ... poked his eye one day while playing with those thickened page kids' books ... and that makes us feel so guilty ... cant imagine something like this .. SIDS is real ... :(

No.

Put them in one of those huge Mazes and let a couple wild dogs / lions / hyenas / etc loose in the maze. Instead of using brick walls, use Giant Flatscreen Monitors that are showing footage of some kid playing WoW on their account in their face.

While the article definitely has a 'dark humor' element to it....it has a weirdly valid point.

Can you think of ANY other species where the infant form of it has NO survival instinct at ALL? Not a single one? Won't try to find cover in rain? Will touch a hot surface repeatedly? Can't even right itself when upside down and may SUFFOCATE?

Human infants really are quite shockingly helpless. It's kinda odd.

I wonder if he will have nightmares of the baby crawling towards him on the ceiling.

I don't see how 5 hours could cause the baby's death. If you were to believe that, then how is the baby supposed to sleep at night? Are they supposed to watch it for 8 hrs straight?

I read something awhile back that claimed the reason for this was that because human brains are so large for the relative body size, as evolution progressed, babies had to be born earlier and earlier just for the skull to be small enough to fit through the birth canal. This of course leaves them underdeveloped in comparison to other species at birth.
