Indoor temp during summer?

You guys who keep your houses in the mid 80s or higher are nuts. My man cave upstairs will occasionally hit 84 (even with AC on; it isn't ventilated very well and has a server and HTPC running 24/7) and that is way too hot for my liking.

I HATE heat but keep my ac from 78F-80F. It's more to cut the humidity, than for cooling. I don't like real cold ac cause it makes outside feel more miserable when you get there.

As a reference for what I consider hot, my mood starts to sour when the temp hits 70F, and gets worse from there. I keep my heat on 56F-58F in the winter and that feels great.

While I may not like it, at the end of the day, I have no problem paying $300 electrical bills if I am kept cool and comfy. We generally have the thermostat set to 72 when we're in the house (it is on a schedule that varies based on time of day), but when it is really hot out, I may notch it down a couple of degrees for a while to try to cool the upstairs a little more.

I keep it at 72 as well when we are home and have the same issue with my computer room. I took out the vent cover and have a fan blowing the air from the AC vent into the room to help keep it bearable. In the winter I completely plug the vent opening and allow the computers to heat the room. My goal eventually is to finish a room in the basement and move down there were it is easier to keep it cool.

I feel a little better after reading some of you guy's posts. I have been worried that my AC unit wasn't working properly. I usually keep mine at 74 during the day if we are home but the temp is usually no higher than 80.

We have a house with 5 rooms but we close off two and keep the vents shut to help save some electricity. This past month has been our highest bill so far at $205.

AC generally keeps the house under 80F, however, during extreme heat waves when temp approaches 100 or gets beyond 100, it can be slightly over 80F. Thankfully, I have a basement and it's always at least 10-15 degrees cooler than my 1st floor.

We have central air but it hasn't gotten warm enough yet to use it. When we do it is set to 76-77.

When I was in the Navy and TAD August-October to NAS North Island (Coronado) none of the barracks were air conditioned and the only time I recall that being an issue was a couple of days of Santa Ana winds but even then it was not as miserable as it would have been on a typical August day here without AC. In fact my first impression getting off a plane in San Diego in late evening the first week of August was surprise at how chilly it was outside.

Yeah, I bought one of those little booster fans for the register and it does make a difference. I tried to convince my wife to let me move my server equipment to a corner of our master closet, but that didn't float. Imagine that. 😀

During the day, it's gotten up to maybe 90 or so, because we just leave it off. When we're home it's set to 78 or so. Takes a while to get there on really hot days.
