you might like paramore for more mainstream stuff.

I think they'd be better with a different producer. Too slick and glossy.

the chick in that band is slick and glossy ;)

i'm kind of into them. i kinda wish i would have went to the MAC to see them a few months ago with jimmy eat world.

I thought about it, my daughter likes Paramore a lot :p

Wow, thats said. While all good, they are all overplayed here in so cal (Kroq, 91.X). Oh if you like the Kilelrs you'll probably love She Wants Revenge.

Bill

Consider yourself lucky. If it's not top 40 we don't have it on the radio around here. Anyway thanks for the suggestions.
If that's true I wouldn't bother listening to the radio where you are. Listen to internet radio. I never willingly listen to top 40 radio. There are lots and lots or really alternative stations to choose from. Our station, KALX Berkeley, streams in 3 formats and the MP3 stream at 128k sounds as good as my AV receiver. You can even record it and listen to it later on portable MP3 player, why not? Most of the alternative stations around here also stream (e.g. KFJC, KUSF), you can pick up WFMU out of NY, there are probably hundreds of great stations to choose from, check out, etc. The type of station I listen to (college radio) has different DJs with different tastes and lots of freedom, so you get exposed to all kinds of great stuff you would never encounter on commercial radio.

I'm not saying their later stuff sucks (just don't know), but the albums I have are the first two, 39 Smooth and Kerplunk .

I love Paramore. I wish they had more stuff, I've kind of overplayed their Riot cd.

I was really going to cry if I had gone thought an indie rock thread without their name mentioned.

I can say the same for Metallica. I still love Kill 'em All, but never bothered checking out anything after that, although they are just about impossible to completely avoid. Stuff from before they got big, both bands.

I still liked them up to and including Master of Puppets, but after that it was all garbage IMO.

Some of my favorite bands in this genre:

Modest Mouse
Smashing Pumpkins
At The Drive-in
The Killers
Fugazi
Pavement
Death Cab
Elliot Smith
The Rapture
VHS or Beta
Death from above 1979
The New Pornographers
As Tall as Lions
Vampire Weekend
The Stills

I also recomend checking out some post-rock bands like:

Explosions in the Sky (Amazing live btw)
Do Make Say Think
Battles

They're pure instrumental groups, but it's anything but dull.

I'd add Godspeed You! Black Emperor to that list.

If you like listening to a compilation-type album, check out anything from Alternative Times. This is a compilation of many alternative- and indie-rock bands. Many appear on Alternative Times compilations before some of the radio stations get on the bandwagons.

You can grab some samples from torrents or the other unspoken treasure trove. Not sure where you can pick them up legit however...

I saw no mention of Nada Surf. I was going to suggest CAKE and Spoon, but I see you already like them. Muse and Oasis aren't small, but they're my two favorites.

I recently listened to several songs from the Manic Street Preachers, and they're quite good.

The Flaming Lips? Angels & Airwaves? Editors? Doves? Stereophonics?
