Yes, we've seen what he does to Russian journalists and his political opponents in Russia. It's highly doubtful he'd take the risk of taking out an American citizen with a public profile. I don't buy that Manafort is afraid of the Russians.

Putin would only attempt something on Manafort IF he flipped on the Russians. It would send the wrong message to mess with Manafort while he remains loyal.

That’s why I speculate Manafort hasn’t and won’t flip. And Putin isn’t afraid of taking risks. He whacks people in the west already.

The only people I've heard about him "whacking in the west" (attempted) was that former Russian agent and his daughter in the UK.

I think taking out an American public figure with known ties to Russia would be a seriously reckless move. Putin is a killer, but he isn't a fool.

In any event, we'll know soon enough if I'm correct about the promised pardon. Manafort is likely going to be convicted, possibly before the end of this week.

He'd need to give Mueller Trump's head on a plate in order to escape prison & I doubt he can do that. Otherwise he already would have done it.

His hits in the United States have plausible deniability.

Or he could have done just that but chose not to because Trump offered him something better: a full pardon. Offering up a pardon to keep someone silent is well within Trump's wheelhouse.

pardon requires admission of guilt. states could potentially have a field day, even if the federal charges are gone, right?
 
Trump shouldn’t pardon Manafort if he’s found guilty no matter how much he wants to.

I think it’s a trap.

It would unleash the kraken of indictments against the Trump people because it would be the most clear cut case of obstruction of justice yet.

If he had that, for sure, I figure he wouldn't have bothered with witness tampering & would be out on bond today. That could last for years, probably until Nov of 2020.

Which isn't to say that Trump won't pardon him, at all. Manafort's best case scenario is for Trump to be forced to resign early & pardon those who stood fast when he does. Or just blow them out his ass should it come to that.

No, it doesn't. The POTUS can pardon people even before they've been charged with a crime.

As for state convictions, that won't work after his trial is over because at that point double jeopardy will have attached. The only way a state DA can charge him is if some charges are being held back in the event of a pardon. They won't be able to try him again for what he is on trial for now.

Decent chance Pence would pardon Manafort on his way out if necessary. The only reason Pence is VP is because of Manafort.

Double Jeopardy applies only for the same crime. A state could try him for other State crimes, maybe state tax evasion.
