I sometimes wear a polo to the gym. What's the problem with that?

In principle there is really nothing wrong with it. Like Anubis said, a shirt is a shirt.

It's really more about general expectations and failures (or outright refusals) to assimilate in accordance with them. In the gym, people expect one another to wear "gym clothes," and shirts with collars are not included in this category.

A gym is an amusing little microcosm of society. Most people are in there to make themselves look better, so as a consequence people tend to have a heightened awareness of image expectations, and they judge other people in accordance with them.

Is it stupid and petty? Yes. Still, I'll be the first to admit I'm guilty of it.

Are you talking about at the gym? Because they're doing that to make themselves sweat more and/or keep themselves as warm as possible between exercises.

No they're not. Young kiddies are wearing their hoodies up indoors in the gym because they think it's a cool and hip thing to do. Don't kid yourself.

Yeah I'm not following here...

Hoodie/sweat shirts inside in an everyday manner, like at stores/home? I see nothing to find amusing/annoying about (and I am such a hoodie wearer when I'm not focused on "dressing up" for the night).

Hoodies in the gym? Makes sense, as I assume the people wearing them understand it is making them quite a bit warmer during their exercise routine. Which increased body thermals is a great approach to weight loss/training for an unbearably hot environment.
Working hard while wearing a hoodie is a terrific approach to cutting when on a cut/gain routine.

Really, that seems like a weird thing to do just to sport the look.

Must live in a region with some mentally challenged individuals. I've never seen it at the gym except for the people who are intent on making a certain weight.
Don't confuse a lot of "young kiddies" looking to be hip with the young wrestlers crowd. Sometimes it's touch to tell them apart, but I knew a lot of high school wrestlers who took to the local gyms (and the saunas in them) in hoodies to ensure they made weight for the next match.

Sometimes it's just really fcking cold in the gym.

Edit: This is especially true ever since I started working out in my friend's (townhouse) garage. Don't hate-- It's probably better equipped than most gyms in my area. Power rack, bench, olympic platform, half-rack (so someone can do squats while someone else uses the power rack), erg machine, two 45lb barbells, one 35lb barbell (for his girlfriend), full set of bumper plates (1.25lb -> 55lb), and a set of kettlebells from 10kg -> 30kg. Also a bucket of chalk, a couple lifting belts, a belt to add weights for your chinups/pullups/dips, and a whiteboard to write your workouts on.

One of the most ripped guys I know wears a sweatshirt during his workouts to make himself sweat more. I'm pretty sure its a common practice - I've done it myself.

I knew an Indian dude who used oven mitts when he did the barbell bench press. He said it prevented calluses. I'm not kidding!

weird. I consider manly calluses to be one of the many benefits of working out. I sure don't get them from typing all day at my IT day job.

There an older asian guy that comes into my gym regularly and works out with gloves exactly like these:

For all I know they're excellent for lifting, but they just seem really out of place lol. :)

Those are 5 pairs for $5 leather gloves. Cheap pieces of shit that do NOT last. I bought a bag and they just come apart.

You can guess why they bought them though.

I am not your chote bhai. So just STFU. I am actually surprised to know that you even have a wife. You never talk about her.. you only talk about your kids. Do you just lock her in the kitchen? :hmm:

Is this you?

I hate it when those Scottish people wear those skirts when working out. When doing squats they should at least wear underwear or a jock strap.

oh.

Well in that case, I actually haven't been to a gym proper in quite a few years, and so I try to avoid the type of people who actively mimic that kind of Bieber shit.
In college, hoodies up was something you saw every now and then at lecture, but it was very very rare unless it was simply cold as hell in the lecture hall/building of choice. Or they were sick/sleeping in the back. Then it was to block light or general to keep warm. Been through all of that myself with hoodies. Don't see it much outside of that environment/age group unless it's sheer douchebaggery. At our age group, we tend to simply dress "convenient" when we don't care about image. Most of us eventually get to the professional appearance when necessary.

People who actually follow that shit though, jesus I hope they burn. I hope I don't run into many of them.

I wear polos all the time while working out. I've been wearing it all day already, might as well "finish" it off during my evening workout
