India owns US in air combat exercises (Cope India)

D'oh! says US on CNN

"Gen. Hal Hornburg, head of U.S. Air Combat Command, said a U.S. air-to-air exercise with the Indian Air Force in February, in which India used Russian jets to defeat aging American F-15Cs, revealed "that we may not be as far ahead of the rest of the world as we once thought we were."

. . .

U.S. defense officials have said Indian SU-30, Mig-27 and older MiG-21 jets, some armed with Russian-made AA-10 air-to-air missiles, got the best of F-15s based in Alaska in exercise "Cope India" high over northern India."

A wake-up call that we do need to keep spending on military R&D, at least for the basic tools like fighters, bombers, vehicles, and infantry weapons. Too bad the "military industrial complex" uses stories like this to lobby for a blank check to fund every pork program they can think of.

seriously they don't need more money, they need more training for their pilots, they need to get tough with them, the indian pilots no doubt have far less equipment then the american pilots due and their skill comes out of neccisty. they need to be better pilots to be able to fight of the enemy with the better planes.

We've always known that the Soviet fighters were better in many respects than ours. But the difference is that they're not developing them anymore!

Yep. Soviets made damned good fighters.

Old news.

It is most likely a ploy to help get the F22 into production. Just set up a scenario that greatly favors the enemy, show how ill equiped we are to fight, then buy a new plane to solve the "problem".

So, do you think that the US sends its best pilots to compete in air-to-air exercises with India?

How about India? Would they be sending their best to compete with the US?

just another thing... when an AIM52 phoenix missile can track a target from 90 miles, is dogfitghting really necessary with that kind of equipment?

it's been often said that the most effective weapon against terrorists is a fleet of $30 million fighter jets. also, we really should prepare better for the next time we go to war against india or russia.

I thought the F-16 and F-18 was more agile than the F-15 in dogfights. Aren't the Mig-29 supposed to be the best dogfighter.

It's a CNN.com story dated 6-23, but re-reading it I see that "Cope India" took place in February so it might be in archived threads. I searched recent threads before posting, but not archived.

search of archived did turn up this: Indian kicked USAF a$$

K1052 is probably right about the story being revived to push funding for the F22, and CNN (and me) fell right into their trap. D'oh!

The US air force would still smack up the Indian one, much in the same way that the US infantry would smack up the Canadian army, even though Canadians have better snipers 😀

the us air force is afraid of dying, the indian air force gets reincarnaited. maybe the indian pilots feel like they have a little less to lose so they pull some crazy moves?

reminds me of the monorail episode in the simpsons when phil heartman sung the line "you bet your life my hindu friend"

With today's militaries, would dogfighting capability ever decide, or even have a major effect on, a large-scale war involving the U.S.? I don't think so.

No need to get your panties in a twist, US planes don't need to dogfight. They just fire off a couple of missles from over the horizon and that takes care of the problem. US planes aren't designed to be excellent dogfighters anyway.
