That's ok, you're a math major.

Alright, so are we talking about movies that have titles that give no indication of what the movie is about? i.e. Gone with the Wind?

How about The Crying Game

Theres actually a couple of stories about where that expression came from.

One of the most popular is that back in WWII, ammo belts on bombers came in 9 yard increments. If you shot off every round with no jams or misfires, you got "the whole 9 yards".

What this has to do with the movie is beyond me.
Old girl actually made a reference to it during the movie but it almost seemed like a forced line. As if they had to rewrite the script a little to justify the title.

Wow, that wwii thing is quite interesting.

I think that's mostly what the OP was talking about... but unfortunately the discussion got mired down by people trying to make technical points...

Anyways... how about "Hotel Rwanda"?

True, the movie was about a hotel in Rwanda... but nowehere in the movie was it called "Hotel Rwanda"...

:p

That's fine, my gripe is with people who rave about these movies without bothering to look up the words.

And I'll bet just as many English majors have no idea what QED means

I'd heard that it reffered to the ammo belts for fighters. If you've ever seen a mounting browning machine gun in a bomber, you see the ammo box that I doubt would contain nine yards of fifty cal ammo. The ammo boxes in the wings on fighters, like the P-51 and P-47, were much larger. The pilot couldn't change boxes, though, and I believe gunners would have several boxes to shoot.

No offense, but if that is something that truly bothers you, you have some serious social issues.

Can you guys think of any more?

I'd say movies with titles like "Fried Green Tomatos"

...the title says NOTHING about the movie.

"Lethal Weapon"=action
"Titanic"=drama based on a real event
"Snakes on a Plane"=most likely a comedy, even if it's not inteded to be one
"Debbie Does Dallas"=Either a history on snack cakes or porn. They don't put ratings like that on snack cakes...
"How to lose a man in 40 days"=chick flick

...those are titles that say something.

The story I've always heard was it has to do with the size of dump trucks. They were made to hold 8 cubic yards of material, but an extra yard could be piled on the top of it. So if you got the "whole 9 yards", you got all that it could deliver.

It does bother me; however I fail to see how it has anything to do with my sociability?

Plenty of movies have titles like this. They don't make sense unless you've seen the movie, or at least know what it's about.

The Matrix
The Shawshank Redemption
Big Fish
Monsters, Inc.

You would have no idea what any of those movies were about if someone jsut mentioned the title to you and you'd never heard of them before.

Ridiculous, Hollywood these days.

Edit: the movie is titled Infamous and is slated for release in mid-October under Warner Independent.

I know what each word and title means. Incidentally, Double Indemnity is one of my favorite movies of all time.

No, not always, but the OP's example was "Road to Perdition" being indecipherable due to the fact that some poeple might not know what "perdition" means.
I think you have a very difficult time noticing the meaning of posts. You are looking at the words too hard in an attempt to pick the post apart. Why can't you comment on the topic instead? Should movie titles be related to the movie? Should movie titles use common words? Something along those lines. You are seeing the trees and have no idea that you are in a forest.

You have always made me wonder why people like you are Elite while people like notfred aren't.

Please don't ignite this thread again; notfred was out of line and quite frankly wrong, and he was called out on it.

I'll leave your thread alone after this but notfred was at no point wrong or "pwned" or whatever else you might want to say.

Jesus. That is insane.

It looks like they just used a bunch of more famous actors for the roles. Thats all.
