I love it when people cite movies as among their favorites but don't even know what the titles mean. For example, how many people do you think know what the word "perdition" means (Road to Perdition)?

Other examples: V for Vendetta, Double Indemnity, Full Metal Jacket

Can you guys think of any more?

How are those indecipherable? Because you have a tiny vocabulary and lack the ability to operate a dictionary?

Wait, weren't you the one who said you were "likely to be a lot smarter" than someone else? Well, you're certainly proving it now.

Snatch.

(Actually, I was hoping for something else. But it turned out to be a good movie anyway.)

I wouldn't necessarily say I have a tiny vocabulary.. I minored in English literature and composition at Northwestern :)

I know what the words mean, I was just pointing out that it is entertaining to see the looks on peoples' faces when asked if they even know what the titles mean.

So then the word that you don't know the meaning of is "indecipherable".

Yeah, because NO ONE knows that a full metal jacket is...<sigh, rolls eyes>... That big college education really is working for you, isn't it?

So then the word that you don't know the meaning of is "indecipherable".

Not by the most common definition of the word; you would be well advised to look it up before passing judgment my friend.

I am not implying that nobody knows what the words mean; I do think that many people don't though

So then the task that notfred can't do is to read the first post. Veggz is clearly talking of OTHER people having trouble with the words. The word 'indecipherable' means unclear or not easily deciphered. Those words and movie titles are unclear to many people. Those titles are not easily deciphered for many people.

No where does that imply that it CAN'T be deciphered. Nor does it imply that Veggz can't decipher those titles.

There aren't that many definitions.

I hardly think that having to open a dictionary to learn the meaning of a word makes it indecipherable. in fact, I don't think there's a much easier wayto find out the meaning of something than simply looking it up verbatim.

Even if you do know the definition of those words, does it make it clear what the movie is about? Not always.

Personally I believe Merriam-Webster and Oxford are much abler to determine the meaning of words than Princeton University and American Heritage..

I guess I never understood what "The whole nine yards" was describing, I have always assumed it is some foot ball reference.

No, not always, but the OP's example was "Road to Perdition" being indecipherable due to the fact that some poeple might not know what "perdition" means.

I think you have a very difficult time noticing the meaning of posts. You are looking at the words too hard in an attempt to pick the post apart. Why can't you comment on the topic instead? Should movie titles be related to the movie? Should movie titles use common words? Something along those lines. You are seeing the trees and have no idea that you are in a forest.

I'm pretty sure everyone I associate with on a regular basis know what "perdition" "vendetta" and "full metal jacket" mean.

Theres actually a couple of stories about where that expression came from.

One of the most popular is that back in WWII, ammo belts on bombers came in 9 yard increments. If you shot off every round with no jams or misfires, you got "the whole 9 yards".

What this has to do with the movie is beyond me.
Old girl actually made a reference to it during the movie but it almost seemed like a forced line. As if they had to rewrite the script a little to justify the title.

I believe it means "Going all the way," or something.

Hmmm... I have a PhD in Mathematics and I must confess I don't know what the word "perdition" means without lookint it up...

"Vendetta" and "Full-Metal Jacket", I do know, though...

Well, in the movie she was talking about inheriting millions of dollars from her husband or father or something.

I think in that case it meant "getting everything".
