Ignore JStorm01, this is just his platform for bragging about how much he spends on food. It happens fairly regularly.

in fact I just did the math and if I ate that meal 2x a day it would come in at around $40 per month.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture calculates that for every $5 of food-stamp spending, there is $9.20 of total economic activity, as grocers and farmers pay their employees and suppliers, who in turn shop and pay their bills.

Yeah, right!

$5 gets you $9.20 worth?

Let's have a manufacturing industry food stamp plan then.

Let's issue food stamps that are valid for cars and refrigerators, etc.

WTF! ok great she got a increase. but i agree with Genx how many fuckign kids does she havE? how could she not afford fresh produce with $525 amonth?

fuck im feeding 3 adults and 2 kids on 500 a month and we get plenty of fresh veggies and fruit.

"I can't buy a new car, but I can feed my family," she says

Well boo fucking hoo. let me guess you want the goverment to help with that too?

Exactly. I pay $600 for a 2 adults and 4 kids, not to mention the 3 dogs and 2 cats we have. My kids get all kinds of veggies, fresh and canned (which are just as good as fresh).

If you are talking about taste and especially nutritional value, fresh food is much better than canned.

fresh is best fresh picked it actually loses nutritional value as it sits in the fridge for days. farmers markets for the win! $50 a month spent at the farmers market would balance well with other things.

I'm not sure if you are agreeing with me or not. I realize that...but what does that have to do with fresh food being better than canned food in a nutritional.

How do you live off $50 a month? Can you list what you actually buy each week instead of the price you buy? Your list only mentions price and not quantity.

5'8" 170 lbs.

EDIT: I'm a cheap ass. So what?

Everyone on welfare should eat like you. Once they experience food like that, they'll want to get out ASAP.

I'm agreeing with you :) I don't think a person can live on $50 a month.

There was a lady that I saw on the news that lives off $85 I think it was a month with a family of four. She coupon clips, rebates, price matches, and all kinds of stuff like that. She had this big photo like album filled with coupons and such. She said cashiers hate her.

Hi, this is the Coupon Lady. Thanks for the link. I'm actually not the same person who you saw on tv. We're a family of 2, and we have a food budget of $15 a week.

Welcome to AT !

$15 a week , wow. I'm single and spend about 3- 4x that a week.
Does it take a lot of work to save the money ? Do you have to travel to a lot of different stores ?

You end up with fatter poor people is what happens.
So, fresh produce is often scaled back where canned/processed/refined products are instead bought which aren't as nutritious. Fresh produce are the more expensive parts of a food budget, so it isn't hard to understand why most poor people avoid the produce section even when they are on welfare.
For a normal family, sure. But let's get real. Many Americans have little to no fresh veggies/fruits regardless of the money they make. Many poor people live on macaroni and cheese and doritos and coke, and it's not like they couldn't afford some vegetables. A huge fvcking bag of carrots is nearly free. Skip out on that 2L of coke every day and you just bought yourself more bananas than a monkey can throw his sh*t at. Yes, it's harder when you're poor, but basically poor people eat badly for the same reason rich people do: because they like junk food and don't care about their health.
Ramen (40 per box) - $20*
Rice (50 lb bag) - $30*
Eggs (18 per) - $2
Canned corn - $0.75-$1.00
Canned green beans - $0.75-$1.00
Dry Pasta (16 oz) - $1
Pasta sauce - $1.5-$2.00
Chicken - $0.99-$1.19/lb.
Ground beef - $0.99-$1.99/lb.
Bananas (3 lbs.) - $1.50
Soda (2 liter) - $0.75 - $1
Water (per gallon) - $0.30
Bread - $1.25 - $1.50
PB&J - $2
Milk (1/2 gallon) - $1.25
That diet isn't the best. Besides the bananas you have nothing fresh for veggies/fruit. Canned corn and green beans are not terrible, but erally, this is what you eat? You could be doing worse, but throw something fresh in there ;)

I've looked into people who do coupons and it looks like a huge pain in the ass. Sunday paper, ok, but the online playing around stuff is just a big mess. Apparently a lot of stores don't accept printed coupons...Plus have to shop in a million places and buy weird sh*t like tuna from a pharmacy.

clearly you people haven't found the power of truffle ;) and to answer my own question about how to eat cheap. There is only 1 way to eat cheap and be healthy. Rice and beans comes in at just over $1 a day add some veggies and fruit and you have one of the best diets on the planet (mix it up with some chicken breast, avocado and red onion). Maybe grow your own food but in this day and age you need to have your soil tested to make sure nothing harmful is mixed into it.

Yes, it takes a lot of time. I don't do a lot of traveling from store to store, but I do spend a lot of time collecting coupons and reading store ads. We get a lot of our produce from my husband's garden (lettuce, peppers, squash, tomatoes, beans, sweet potatoes, etc). We also live in the midwest, and I think things must be cheaper here. Milk is $1.50 a gallon on sale, for instance.

We did the coupon thing for a while. sure we saved a bunch of money but considering the time we put in it i don't think it was worth it. Not to mention what was in the coupons were nto always what we would eat. so it was either eat stuff we really don't want or have it sit on the shelf.

My maing gripe with the story is that teh lady was not giving her kids fresh produce. but all the sudden a extra $84 she is. i mean WTF thats just nuts. We make sure we always have fresh fruit and veggies for the kids. sure it raises the food bill but i would rather th em eat a watermelon in 2 days then a box of cream puffs (or whateveR)

I cut up the watermelon and throw it in a big bowl. we also usually have grapes wich i put in a big bowl. my kids love haveing what we call the "family special" wich is just watermelon, grapes and whatever friuit/veggies we have all tossed in a big bowl.

we also try to growe as much as we can. this years garden sucks. it hasent come out as well as usual. thinking the weather and rain killed it. next year we plan on doubling the size and growing more fruit. maybe planting a apple tree or 2

waggy you should have your soil tested. It's important. There could be lead paint chips in the soil from houses.

Watermelons last less than 90 minutes for me. 85 minutes to chill and wash, 5 to eat.

yeah usually they last a day. haven't seen one last beyond 2 days. apples last a little longer.

for some reason they don't eat oranges that fast. which is fine i love them.

but both love broccoli and cauliflower. break off a portion and they are happy
