What could cause an inability to wake up?

For instance: Yesterday I went to sleep around midnight/1 o'clock. I slept until around 10am when I was woken up by a house mate to go move my car because I was blocking them in, threw on some shorts, went down stairs and moved my car. I came back up to my room and sat down at my desk to wake up a bit only to completely pass out at my desk and sleep from around 10:15/20 to 3pm where I only got up because I got a phone call, if not I probably would have slept hours more.

If this were a once in a while thing I wouldn't care and just put it off to catching up on sleep but it is not, its an every-day kind of thing. Even when I need to get up early I still manage to sleep late into the afternoon, no matter what time I go to bed at night.

What could cause my body to be so tired/exhaust all the time/sleep so long?

I'm not on any prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, or illegal ones. Drink caffeine but only in the AM or early afternoon. I exercise at least 4 days a week in the gym and get plenty of work outside the gym.

I'm just a bit worried there could be something physically causing my over-sleeping. I am going to a doctor after I get back in town after next week.

I'm like that. For me I'm not sure it's a matter of not getting enough sleep, I just have trouble waking up. If I'm able to force myself out of bed, wash-up, and eat, then I'm good to go the rest of the day. It's tough on weekends, I don't have as much willpower and tend to oversleep.

Do you feel like it's a battle of will or just that your body dies out and shuts down? I've had bouts of stuff like this, where I feel it was more willpower for me. I've learned to overcome that by getting out of bed, doing some pushups/situps, taking a shower, and making breakfast. Some days the pushups will help. Some days it'll be the shower to wake me up. It just helps me to get up an moving with a purpose.

I have a job but my hours are different each week. I also go to class and have to be up two days a week at 8am and usually manage, even if its at the last possible moment but I still feel tired and on days other days I find it impossible to awake until right before I have to.

Dies and shuts down more than will power.

If you do rotating shifts your body will tend to do that, since it never sleeps at the same hour and your body isn't able to adjust (think of it like like having perpetual jetlag). I've done rotating shifts including overnight shifts, and at first it was fine but as the days wore on while I was doing overnights my body just stopped waking up and I was sleeping 12 hours a day easily. It wasn't uncommon for me to be home at 7am, stay up for an hour and then sleep till 8 pm with the whole day gone by. The solution really is to find a job less stressing on your body and have a proper diet / exercise routine to help.
