It's less dangerous than alcohol and cigarettes or at the very worst just as dangerous. Those two have been integral parts of our society for decades. You see alcohol everywhere you go, it's advertised everywhere, it's on restaurant menus, it's part of normal social interactions. Besides all that it's used in many places almost just as much as it would be if it were legal now. Given the percentage of people who smoke it now whatever horrible apocalyptic things puritans think will come about due to legalization would already be happening now. Make it legal, tax it and put the production into the hands of companies, or let people grow it themselves. For one thing this will remove much of the criminal element that people worry about (the only legitimate argument people have about it).
Continuing to demonize pot as some evil menacing drug while keeping alcohol and cigs legal makes as much sense as banning the sale of green cars while keeping all other colours on the road.
