No, I'd not serve again. I was in a field artillery unit and I hated it. Spent lots of time in the field and it sucks!

I'd definately re-up if given the chance. I can't say I'd definately pick the navy, but it's a possibility. My first choice would be Air Force Space Command, followed by Air Force Intelligence. Those two agencies handle most of the military research and coverups in the US. If I could make it in then I'd have an awesome opportunity to expose classified government projects that the people have a right to know about...probably get killed for it, but it'd totally be worth it. If I couldn't make either of those two I'd probably stick with the Navy since I know how to manipulate the system very well.

I think it's very very important to serve in either the military or a civil position. Without that service I'm strongly against the rights of citizens to manipulate their country. (Read Starship Troopers if you haven't already). Aside from that there are wonderful benefits to joining, economic and otherwise.

My uncle makes bombs and missiles for the air force. That's all he could tell me :(

language translators have got it sweet in the Army, and the re-enlist bonuses are sweeter still.

Cryptography. Lots of jobs available after the service. You must be able to get top level security clearance, that is not a blemish not even a bounced check, a super MOS, a lot of embassy jobs available.

I'll have to agree with that.... one of the nicest perks in all the military is a tour at the Defense Language Institute out in Monterery, California. Beautiful place, and more females per capita than probably any other place you're likely to be assigned in the Army :)

BTW, your best bet is to honestly self-assess yourself and what you enjoy doing and have an aptitude for. If you're not a physical type but rather a more cerebral person, than the combat arms (infantry, artillery, etc) is likely not for you. If you are, then go for the gusto and sign up as 11X with the Airborne training option, and you'll be in hog heaven. I served in a Special Forces unit myself, so i can give you a good idea of what's involved in being a grunt.

If you're more of a thinker type, and the idea of being a gun-bunny and dragging around a 140+ lb rucksack doesn't appeal to you, military intelligence is a good and pretty broad field, as well as medical jobs, Army marching band, and some support positions (there's even legal and chaplains assistant positions available). Just decide what you have a knack for, and see what they have to offer which seems like it might be a fit.

If you have a couple ideas in mind, i'll ask around with some old Army buds, and we'll likely be able to put you in touch with someone who served in that MOS previously or is doing so now, and can give you an idea of what the real deal is...

best of luck to you, you're a good man for wanting to serve your country :)

Kinda agree w/ GoodOptics a very little bit. I was field artillery also; glad I did it & glad I got out.

But, what do you really have an interest in? That'll be more of a driver than anything we can say.

Field artillery lends dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl. :D

I wish I could join but I have severe orthopedic problems with my legs. I can't even stand for more than 15 without feeling extreme pain :(

That depends on how long you want to stay in. If you want to stay in longer than one enlistment term, you might want to gain rank quickly, then change your MOS. A good way to do this is do your first four years in the infantry. The infantry/airborne/rangers will give you the highest rank per number of years served than any other MOS.

19K (M1A1-2 tanker) Spent 5 great years doing that and miss it everyday. By far the best Combat Arms MOS in the Army.
That was 10 years ago(87-92), so I'm sure its even cooler now.

Jimbo an easier question to answer would be:
-What jobs should you NOT get stuck with in the ARMY?

There are sooo many "cool" jobs in the ARMY, its actually easier to pick ones that should be avoided.

Quick LARGE sample of Cool jobs:
-Language-(translation, interception, interogation, etc)
-Heavy Artillery is always cool for awhile-(tanks, 155mm cannons)
-Aviation you can;t go wrong, so many cool choices-(armament, avionics, crew chief, etc)
-Even infantry can be cool, you have the easiest chance of attending AWESOME schools-(SERE, rangers, airborne, air assault, etc, etc)
-Truck drivers, they NEVER walk-(lol, talk about sweet at times)
-Demolition-(explosives rock!)

The list goes on and on...

IMHO-worse job, paper pusher...why pick a job you could do anywhere? *just my opinion*

*my 2 cents*

I think you mistyped that statement... i know you of course MEANT to say 18B (or C, D, E, or F for that matter). I know you mistyped it because there ain't no way that someone would ever claim that being a DAT was the best job in the Army ;)
