not sure if i should go solar quartz or automatic mechanical

I know that quartz is more accurate, but people seem to prefer old school mechanical. Is it nostalgia?

I honestly don't know what to choose. I like watches after i got a free Casio from someone, just feels right to wear. I'd like to get a better more stylish one tho as the casio i have is a womens watch

help?

I am not gonna collect them, i really just need one

If you have a watch feel free to post pics

How much are you willing to spend? I'm currently using an Apple watch for day to day use.

500 dollars max, I'm looking at Casio G steel right now. 380 dollars price tag

I know my reasons for getting a watch. For fashionable style and the appreciation of mathematics, craftsmanship. and time piece engineering. I'm also getting into the habit of looking at my wrist more. Looks cool

Don't know why you'd bother. I have a watch but never wear it. Another's battery has died, haven't bothered to replace it. They are both cheap watches, but a cheap watch will keep great time nowadays. When I was growing up you were lucky if it stayed within a minute of correct time in a day. Watches came out that were within a second (quartz), wow...

I wouldn't spend much on a watch now. Really, I think watches, particularly expensive watches are more trouble than they're worth. A cell phone gives you accurate enough time. I have an app on my phone that gives me time to the nearest second. It's as much as I need. I have no idea why someone would buy a Rolex or any watch costing 4 figures. Just that thing hugging my wrist gives me the willies.

g steel is relatively cheap compared to a rolex. I think it looks nice too. Doesn't have many moving parts inside like a rolex, but will be more accurate

I dont wear a watch, find them useless for everyday purposes as we all pack a cell phone if we need to know the time.

People look like dufus's wearing Apple watches. The incessant tapping on their wrists and constant notifications really fuckin annoy me. You wouldn't look at your phone in an important meeting but staring at your wrist is OK?

Flashy, large, gaudy, big faced watches just make people look pathetic. My old CFO used to wear a leather banded Patek. He wasn't a douche.

My advice - Seiko Titanium, at least your not hauling around a 3lb hunk of steel on your wrist

found a watch that is 135 dollars that fits my aesthetic pallet, solar too, tells you day of the week as well

consider this my starter watch. The gshock g steel watch is for rugged outdoor activity. This fits my casual lyfestyle. I wonder what i'm missing out on not saving for a higher end piece. Someone tell me, is it just the quality of the materials used in the making of those watches or the process of how they make them?

posting in Naer thread

1. the quartz vs mechanical is very much a fad. It does have a historical reason of being, where mechanical watches for many years pushed the envelope on accuracy and practicality. However, since the invention of quartz, most of these advances have become redundant.
Quartz watches are ridiculously accurate, far otclassing any mechanical watch.
the reason why mechanical watches still sell is because they are expensive, like jewelry.

2. i am currently wearing a Casio $20 watch from amazon. It looks great and has not lost a single second of time. There are good watches you can buy from $20 upwards to 2 grand, but realistically you start to hit a cap in price around the $500 mark. Anything above that is unnecessary markup.

3. depending on your budget, i would make a recommendation, but if you want to go all out and get an endgame watch, i would look into the Casio or Citizen radio-controlled series.
For example, the Casio OCW-S100-AJF
casio-oceanus-ocw-s100-1ajf-made-in-japan-radio-wave_425_1200x.jpg

This is a quartz watch that costs $500.
It is made of 100% ultralight, ipoallergenic titanium with a carbide hardened layer, and unscratchable synthetic sapphire glass
it is entirely solar-powered - never needs a battery
it is always 100% accurate to the second, tuning to the Atomic World Clock radio signal
includes a perpetual calendar (always the right date)
it has a feature to change timezone without any accuracy loss
it is full waterproof to diving depths
the case and bracelet are finished to top industry-standard (actually done by the Grand Seiko factory)

there is no mechanical watch under 3 grand that can even begin to compete. if you want accuracy and reliability, this is it.

if you want good looks, that's entirely up to you.

Invicta makes a machanical self-wnding diver watch that cost $100 and looks good, if that's what floats your boat.

thank you for that digdog,

I want to like silver as a watch band, dunno it's not quite sticking to me aesthetically. BRB trying to imagine my self wearing that. Now that i am imagining it, it's growing on me

This one is a little less than 250 dollars, does the same thing as Oceanus i think

edit: I am feeling this one at the moment, if i had to choose now it would be this one
