The Church and State thing originally meant there was to be no official religion and that all views were to be tolerated. Over time, unfortunately, 'Tolerance' was substituted with "Intolerance". So now all we do is scream that the other guy is wrong. Followed shortly by someone else screaming that (your) screaming is wrong.



And, if you want to stir the pot, you could start with why "Novus Ordo Seclorum" - which also appears our dollar bill - means the Illuminati have taken over the United States. And perhaps add interpretations of the fact that "In God We Trust" appears on $1 and $5 bills, but not on a $20: Meaning eventually Cash will Triumph over Religion...

Actually as you quoted in post #3 we did it in 1860, just added it to paper currency in the 50's...and while it's generally believed to be referring to the Christian God, it really doesn't specify what religion...

E Pluribus Unum was OK, but with the fascists in the 30s and 40s and then the commie scare of the 1950s it had to go. We needed something that distinguished Americans from fascism and communism and In God We Trust fit the bill. Whether you are religious or not it expresses that deep seated all American distrust of everything.

We don't trust fascism, we don't trust communism, we don't trust the federal government, we don't trust each other, and we certainly don't trust some little piece of green paper. Oh, we could have put something else like "Trust No One" but, that wouldn't sit too well with the banks and Wall Street boys putting that on money. Nope, it had to be In God We Trust because even our religions don't trust anyone else. Putting it on smaller bills was just a way to remind the poor that if nothing else they always had their religion to fall back on.
