In Disney's shadow, homeless families struggle

The U.S. has become a third world country right before our eyes.

All by design by the rich.

As supported by those you see post in here.

Disgusting.

Actually, I have proposed a Welfare system / economy that would make Communists jealous. I see the plight of the American people and believe those who have been dropped from Capitalism need a safety net that can sustain them indefinitely.

I see the value of labor falling, the number of jobless rising, and I propose action that would deliver them from fear of starving or homelessness. I would make policy to flood the market with essential goods. A policy with cheap labor and even cheaper product. To make the cost of Welfare something affordable.

I also believe such a safety net may co-exist with and in many ways benefit Capitalism.

Way to completely miss the point of the thread, but as it happens in this particular case, TWO low-skill jobs won't even raise a family of ONE, as these peeps don't even earn enough for rent, much less food, clothes and all the other stuff a family also needs (such as medical care for example).

Fcking disgusting is what it is. Plutocrat apologists, feel free to continue trolling as you were...

Interesting, in your liberal world a father, mother, and two kids is a family of one?

Furthermore, if you had read the article, you would have seen that this area of Florida has attracted massive numbers of homeless hoping to get a job in the tourism industry. Well common sense tells me if an area is flooded with workers and I need more money, I move somewhere else.

I don't understand a person moving their family without securing a job that was adequate to support the family first.

Having a job is a right. These greedy corporations should be forced to hire anyone who wants a job, and at a living wage too, there's no reason Billy Bob's 15 children should have to suffer because execs want another gold plated yacht.

Well common sense tells me if an area is flooded with workers and I need more money, I ...
...encourage my govt and its cronies to cancel immigration laws and invite in millions more workers willing to work for even less than the last batch.

Anthony and Candice Johnson found work at a barbecue restaurant and a 7-Eleven. Their combined salaries nevertheless fell short of what they needed to rent an apartment, so the couple and their two children have instead been hopping among cheap motel rooms along U.S. 192.

no marketable skills + 2 kids, what could go wrong?

both parents do full time work and yet they still can not afford an apartment

there is something wrong with that situation

rents are ridiculous

they can't afford an apartment cuz they have kids they can't afford. THAT'S what is wrong with the situation.

I mean really now, why do they even think they're entitled to an apartment by themselves? when my parents were poor as hell we shared a 2 bedroom house with 5 other family members. i bet it's cheaper than the motels they're staying in too.

no that is not what is wrong with the situation

this would not have been a problem 50 years ago

food also

uhm, they make a combined 2400/month. with 2 kids they probably pay zero in taxes. find a house with a bedroom for rent ($800) and you're set.

800 is a ridiculous amount to pay for even a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment provided that it is not too luxuriously furnished

😵
maybe cuz you live in BFE Minnesota; I'd love to pay "only" $800 for a 1BR here.

that's all besides the point: whatever the cost is, it's going to be a necessary cost that the couple in the OP would need to pay. Did they need to have kids? No. Do the kids take away money that could otherwise be used to pay rent? Yes.

well even studios around here now cost up to 750

like 1000 for a somewhat nice 1 or 2 bedroom apartment

the only studio apartments under 450 are in the middle of downtown

everything else is at least above 550

this is a lot more money than like 10 years ago

this sounds like some thickly veiled class eugenics

In order to have cheap manufacturing we need materials and energy. Liquid fluoride thorium reactors would give us unlimited energy, marketable isotopes, as well as nuclear waste recycling. Raw materials could be mined from the solar system at large ; it's time we started to expand and exploit the solar system.

Otherwise I would say good luck, and don't hold your breath... As our leaders seem to be terminally retarded.

Ahh yes, back in the good ol' days when everyone had everything they wanted. Well... except they didn't. And the good ol' days really weren't.

Perhaps. So buy property. Rent it out for 4x less than your neighbors.

Minimum wage jobs at theme parks are typically for teenagers and college students. There are federal programs for persons that can not afford housing. Obviously the article is designed for certain readers, like the OP.

I started working 40 years ago, the minimum wage was $2.65/hr, you would have been lucky to find a 2 BR apartment in the $275 - $325 a month. Looks to me that wages and monthly rent are the same ratio as it was way back then.

I checked them out years ago since our company headquarters is in Anaheim. They are very fair. They pay for shit at all levels. Well, except you know, the execs.

Really? Lets do some quick math here. The article says most rents in the area start around $800/mo. They are spending $40(minimum) per night to stay in a motel, coming out to $1200/mo. Sounds like they are just not so smart, not rent is too high.

Pretty much. We're an energy based economy. Even the cost of physical goods is based on the cost of energy required to extract, refine, and manipulate them. You lower energy costs, you drop the price of everything.

So in another words, if we make the cost of energy so high that shipping goods from China to here would be prohibitively expensive..... we might get our manufacturing jobs back?

I love Bober.... he so funny.
