I believe Fry's started in Texas, then opened stores around silicon Valley, and are spreading from there. The salesperson I talked to said they're looking to open one or two more stores in ChicagoLand in the next year or two (North and central, closer to the city).

fry's started in the silicon valley, first store was located in sunnyvale in an EXTREMELY small location and they finally moved into a larger location down the street. they expanded around the bay area, then acquired the "incredible universe" stores. i used to go to the really small sunnyvale location from time to time (i had friends that worked there too) until they opened the bigger one in san jose (i forget which was second. maybe campbell, but i don't like that one.)

"Fry's Electronics, Inc. was founded in 1985 in Sunnyvale, California in a 20,000 square-foot location by the three Fry brothers, John, Randy, and Dave; and Kathy Kolder. Fry's is a closely-held private company, and all of the founders are actively involved in the daily operation of the business."
