Just an experience thing then. Still doesn't change the fact that you HAVE to be more careful about you surroundings. What if instead of being a car that you hit it was someone on a bike or motorcycle? A child perhaps in a Big Wheel? You could have easily caused massive bodily harm if not death due to you incompetence...something that even with the lack of experience is still COMPLETELY your fault due to your inability to check ALL sectors around you.

Remember...cars are deadly...unsafe and inexperienced drivers only make it worse...

And I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but my fiance, the woman I loved with every part of my being was killing by someone who hit her with their car, so you must forgive me if I sound unsympathetic.

I'm sorry to hear that. I am not trying to lay the blame on anyone else. I am aware of how dangerous cars can be. The problem as others have said here is that for one it's easy to get a license and the only way to get real experience is out in the real world. This is the same as with anything there is a learning curve during which people make mistakes. Unfortunately with a car you ARE behind the wheel of a potentially deadly weapon. I am definitely going to be extra extra cautious in the future. What they probably really should do is mandate lessons and road test BEFORE they issue learners licenses. Though for reasons explained above I'm not sure that would have prevented this accident.

No accidents, tickets, or anything resulting in any kind of damage so far. :)

10 years of Californian driving under my belt with nothing really worth mentioning, it's still no big deal.
You should have at least 20+ years then you can say something worth your record.

The learners permit can work...here its up to a year I think before you can get a license. What REALLY matters is who you have to teach you once you get a learners permit.

Go to racing school...youll learn quick about everything...really the best way to train ;-)

ah man bummer :( You are certainly learning in the most rough way. I guess its good to get these types of accidents "out of the way" early on. No book could have taught you the lesson you just learned in such a sharp and "to the point" fashion. You have learned two very important lessons that you won't be forgetting. 1. Driving with a "bubble" so that you have enough distance to slam brakes and not hit the person in front of you. 2. Adjust mirrors properly and when pulling out of a driveway or parking spot, always look twice or three times.

Heh no 1/2 Asian 1/2 Caucasian. Never said it was excusable. The only excuse I have is that I'm a new driver. I may be 27 but still new to driving. I guess I got a little too confident.

are u old or a female by chance?

It is your fault for not being 100% sure the road was clear. You can be sure the insurance company will give you the same story. Your fault, "failure to yield"

Shit happens. Move on and fucking pay attention.

Been driving since I was 16. 29 now with no accidents. Lots of speeding tickets though. Probably lots more to come.

Friend of speed.

Time to sign up for a driving school. I'm seriously considering forcing my wife to learn how to apex a turn, navigate the cones and pull out of a drift.

These types of courses will improve your confidence in a tangible way: you'll actually be a better driver instead of another tool in a Maxima or G35 who thinks they know how to drive.

That sucks. It's just one of those things. There's no way to really fix it, other than to be more careful. Maybe try bubble mirrors on your side mirrors. I use those; I don't even have a rearview mirror. I got tired of it falling off in the summer heat, and quit installing it :^D It got in the way anyhow. It was right in my sight line when when looking a stoplights and stuff.

Been driving for about 6 years now. Only one accident to speak of, and it wasn't my fault.

I was sitting in traffic last August. I was completely stopped. I was waiting for traffic to move, so I checked my rearview mirror and saw a white Buick barreling towards me. By time the driver tried to stop, it was too late and it rear-ended me. The driver was a teenage girl. She told me, and I quote, "I'm so sorry, I thought traffic was moving."

I've had 2 cases of bad luck. That fact that I'm new isn't an excuse it's an explanation. Everyone who's a newb at something isn't as good at the beginning as they are latter on. I got a little too confident and probably didn't check quite well enough when I pulled out from the curb. This was my fault and I'm not trying to put this on anyone else.

Bad luck? Bullshit - bad driving. Luck had nothing to do with it. What if I was hauling a trailer or a boat behind my car, your excuse for pulling out into it would be that it was tailgating my car? You're a horrible driver if you think there's any excuse for pulling into traffic and causing an accident. If our country didn't treat driver's licenses as an entitlement rather than something you earn, your license ought to be yanked right now & you forced into drivers ed for a year or something.

How is it you've managed to screw up so much in driving and I haven't?

It seems I am the one who is the superior driver out of AT so far...

I highly doubt you are the superior anything...especially the superior driver...

I held a Class A license (or its equivalent) for more than 35 years. I racked up about 500,000 commercial miles and at least that many personal miles...all without a chargable accident and only 4-5 chargable tickets in all that time.

Yes, I've been in a few vehicle accidents, usually when someone like the OP got too close...:p but none were even slightly my fault.

I've had the priviledge of attending quite a few company/government sponsored driving schools however. Some of those were VERY informative...and lots of fun.

I know there are several other ATOTers who also hold/held commercial driving licenses and who are probably far superior to lil Froot Loops when it comes to driving...and our dogs/cats are probably better drivers than that Canuckistanian vehicle terrarest...Locut0s :p

I know a couple of drivers that have been in pretty serious accidents in their early years of driving:

My brother was slowing down for traffic and his foot slipped off the brake on to the accelerator causing his car to accelerate hard and rear-end the car in front, which in turn hit another car. Both the cars, which he hit were written off; the car sandwiched in the middle was shortened in length by about a foot.

My friend had a serious accident where a driver on the opposite side of the road cut across a sweeping bend on to my friend's side of the road. He was in a beater, which folded up like a tin can (even the roof was bent in the middle from the impact). The impact also caused my friend to bite through his lower lip and take a chunk out the top of the steering wheel. He had to have surgery to fix his face.

Personally, I haven't been in any accidents during my 9 years of driving, although I have bumped a couple of dwarf walls in car parks (which haven't caused any damage). I also had an altercation with a removal lorry on a narrow country lane, which dented the front wing and put a split in the bumper. Not that a big a deal though. These all happened within 1-2 years of getting my license.

I would suggest that you take an advanced driving course and maybe buy your own (beater) car, so you stop affecting your dad's insurance premium.

Dude...shoulder check. Always. Turn your head as far around as you can and make sure nothing is there before you pull out. The mirrors are not enough.

Also, I can't stress enough that you should take the full Young Drivers program. 2 weeks of driving school is not nearly enough.

https://www.yd.com/chooser/courses.aspx

Look at the BA course. This will teach you how to proactively avoid problems and use emergency maneuvers. I took the program years ago and I've avoided numerous incidents because of it. Trust me, this will be one of the best investments you make.

Over 1,000,000 miles accident free before I stopped driving OTR.

OP---buy a bus pass.

Yeah, ATOT brag detector went off like crazy when I read that post. I know there are some of you veteran drivers around with 2-3 decades of driving experience and minimal or zero incidents.

Not to mention this is CA, the land where automobiles rule and are hostile to all other means of transportation.
