In all seriousness, if the NRA collapses whos gonna protect the 2nd Amendment?

The NRA isn't going anywhere but if it did the ACLU sure as fuck wouldn't fill the void. It would probably be the Second Amendment Foundation.

I have little doubt that parts of this country would look more like a theocracy than a democracy if it weren't for the ACLU and groups like them but their silence on the 2nd Amendment is deafening. They typically only weigh in on the 2A when they think other rights are being violated, usually 4th amendment issues. "Shall not be infringed" seems to have very little meaning to them when it comes to the second and because of that they get no financial support from me despite their very good work in other areas.

The ACLU will be no help. They believe the 2nd is a collective right (only national guard), not an individual right. For some reason Amendments 1 and 3 - 9 are individual rights, but not number 2.

If the NRA losses sway with congress and its members, then it will be the Second Amendment Foundation that will see its influence grow. https://www.saf.org/

The 2nd amendment is already protected...by the supreme court. How much more protection does it need?

The supreme court is no defender of the 2nd amendment as gun owners view it. All they do is interpret the meaning of the amendment and if you change the makeup of the Supreme Court you can change the interpretation. Why else do you think there is so much focus on which party gets to assign new Supreme Court justices? Why did the Republicans ignore Obama's nomination Merrick Garland? Its because they can start a process to change rulings, both present and past, just by nominating a justice that views they way they want.

I linked to an ACLU whitepaper on guns back at #15.

Do any of those other amendments include language that explicitly mention it as being a collective right like the Second Amendment does?

The NRA is not going anywhere, and even if it did it would be replaced by an identical group, with most of the same people, the very next day. Have we forgotten that the NRA is a lobbyist group for a multi-billion dollar industry? That industry, and it's money, are the real power of the NRA, and that will still be there.

I'm not sure it would. Oh, the gun industry would no doubt love to start something new, but that lobby group would face the same problems the NRA does now: advertisers and insurers wouldn't want to support it, and it wouldn't have any more public favor than it does now (that is, it's low outside of the hardcore base).

I believe that as more and more of America becomes threatened by gun violence in proportion to the population that depend on guns for home defense, the right to bear arms will per force be amended. People are not going to tolerate forever being killed by weapons of mass destruction just because the constitution appears to say they can be. Any sane person can see that we have a gun violence epidemic that needs dealing with.

Um, the 2nd amendment is what it is today specifically because of the supreme court and there isn't anything that's going to happen anytime in the next 30 years that will change it. Maybe if garland was seated you'd have a point but he wasn't.
