Impressions of Warcraft 3 2.5 weeks into it?

What do all the other beta and/or fake beta (playing non-official versions) think of this? I've only played 8 games due to time constraints but so far I'm pretty impressed.

There are some balancing issues that will be sorted out but for now the game is very fun. I've found that standard RTS games have just gotten tedious and monotonous. War3 introduces a very low unit count and heros, which add an interesting level of play. I find that games go quite fast averaging 15-20 minutes at most much of the time. The longest game I played was 35 min and the shortest (I lost) was approx 10 minutes.

The problem with games like AOE2 is that by the end of a long game you're so darn tired out you don't want to play again (well I don't), but in War3 it's easy to play a few games back to back.

As things are looking now I'm going to buy it for sure. I was originally not interested in it at all but once I got the beta I realized that it was not just another tired old RTS. Much of it is like War2 of course but I think Blizzard's modifications to play have worked out well.

Did you ever play warlords: battlecry? How similar is it?

That 15-20 minute game fact looks promising. I used to love the beginning of games of warcraft, etc. But by the end I just lost patience and I would set up a bunch of guard towers and go watch tv while my buddies finished out the game.

I've never played warlords. In fact I had not even heard of it until yesterday 😱

I also think the short length is a major, major bonus. RTS games on the net are fun but sometimes they just get so darn big and long unless somebody rush-kills at the beginning that it can be tiresome. You need to set apart a lot of time to play and I personally found that when I'd lose a long game it really sucked because so much time had been "wasted".

In this if I have a half hour free I can play. I think that you'll find that given the upkeep and unit restrictions the high quality players will decimate those players inexperienced at juggling numbers perfectly. Not sure if that is good or bad though...I lost 5 games in a row until I learned that putting more than 5 peons on a mine at once does no good (they just queue to get in). Build order can be important as always...

The games go quite aggressively though but since things are constantly happening they are pretty fun.

I love WC3, the graphics are gorgeous, and the Night Elves have women warriors, which are always kick ass in my book. 😉 I really enjoy playing it, except I never played WC before this. So I end up getting my booty kicked a whole lot. I am definitely going to buy this one.

<< i'm thoroughly enjoying the game. I getting my ass WHUPPED, but i love it >>

Isn't that nice about it? I've played 8 games. Won the first one easily (both of us sucked, me a bit less), lost the next 5, won one this morning, and narrowly lost one at lunch. I enjoyed the one at lunch the most. Losing was no heartache to me. I learn so much each game that even when I lose it's ok 🙂

BTW it is scheduled for mid summer.

Hehe, yup, same here. Although theres a far less unit count and less advancing in the tech three, the fact that the unit cap of 90 and te few gold mines makes it so important to use your resources carefully. Every single dollar spent, every single guy lost plays a huge factor. So each battle is so important.. the only thing I wish is that it had more of an attack/counter gameplay. Once they fix the balancing it should be sweeter, right now everyone goes for the same type of units (well if they know what their doing)...

xlo Good point on the Undead. THe game at lunch I was human playing undead. I repelled the first couple of attacks but his spiders really are quite nasty. We were both building similarly but when I was attacked his initial army only died after it fought mine plus I was crapping out grunts during the fight that were also upgraded.

xlo, so thats why when I am still making my warriors, they are able to kick my butt so badly! Thank you, since I haven't tried anyone else I didn't realize this. 😛

you guys see that they're taking away pig farms for the orcs in the next update.. wonder how they'll get food..

<< Another Beta tester here.

I've played about 30 so games and this is my overall impression:

Couple of minor imbalance
1. The Defend ability of Human footman negates all ranged damaged to 3-6 from 20-30+. This is good and all with other races but it is extremely overpowering to Night Elves. Because Night Elves do not have a melee fighter (Archers and Huntress are both ranged). It is extremely easy to defeat Night Elves with 4-8 Footman in the early game with Defend ability (researchable in Barrack, no prerequisites).
Simply building 2 barracks in the start of the game, and make some humans and charge into Night Elves and game over. Whereas Night Elves are stuck with initial Archers (all purpose ranged figher and weak as hell, just like Marines from StarCraft) and in order for them to make stronger shorter ranged Huntresses, they have to build Hunter's Hall (315gold 50~wood)
This is quite an imbalance I believe. Imagine 2 Humans vs 2 Night Elves. This will worsen the balance even more..

2. Undead's Fiend Spiders are TOO STRONG vs Orc & Humans. Fiend Spiders are secondary units of Undead (after Ghouls) They pack whopping 500hp and 60 ranged Spider attack that deals 21-31 damage. They come very early in the game, right after building Graveyard, which is right after making your first initial Crypt (Barrack)
Now Orc and Humans are stuck with weak weak 300hp footman and grunts that deal 11-15 damage and most importantly they're pathetic melee. Their secondary units are Rifleman and Troll Spearer (both typical weak ranged fighters with mere 200hp).
It is very hard to defend groups of 4-6 Spiders in the early game. They're ranged yet powerful as hell (500hp, 21-31 damage) It's very hard for Human and Orc to defeat them. Sure They can use their Defend ability and Berserk, but remember they're melee and Spiders can literally dance around, (hit and run) making the melee fighters never consistently hit.. Their next powerful melee fighters come very late in the game which are Knights and Tauren.

Those spiders are very Dragoon-like from Starcraft, Big, whopping HP, and Ranged attacks. Remember it was very hard to fight off against mass-gooning player? Same applies to WC3. While Orc and Human try to defend Spiders with combinations of Footman, Rifleman and Catapults, Undead can easily continue pumping Spiders..

I'll edit in some more later on.

elves are so overpowered, humans are the only ones that can stand a chance. The huntress is so dominating since they low tech and so strong and you get around the defend by getting a lvl 2-4 keeper of the moon you can have virtually over 10 + trees fighting with 8 archers and like 10 huntress by the end of the first night

other than that i'd say the game is pretty good i think they need to beef up the orcs though their heroes seem to be the best thing but every race has good heroes esp the keeper of the grove/ paladin/ and undead one that can raise

i still think SC reigns as best RTS ever but this is as good as you can get without beating SC

blizzard definitely did a good job

okay this game looks really cool, but I am too lzy to look this stuff up? What are the basic requirements? (Can I run this on a 600mhz laptop) and is this a decent single player game as far as the AI goes? I have a crappy dial up at home where I will be playing most of the time. Hmm... maybe I will just become an unofficial beta tester as well.

Arggggg damnit!! How did you all get in the beta!? I've been waiting for the game for sooo long but didn't get in the beta! Did you guys actually get in or did you "acquire" it somewhere?

The beta verison doesn't come with a single play mode or any Computer players to play againist. You can only play other people on battle.net... unless you have the crack which I think lets you set up your own servers... but still no single player mode.

I just got lucky. 2.5 weeks ago on Friday it showed up in a fedex envelope. I could hardly believe it! I only got a new vid card on Friday so I couldn't even play until then.

In regards to requirements 600 mhz is ok but you'll want 128+ megs ram, and for video card a 16 meg is the absolute minimum (3d).

I don't really like any of the sides in the game. And the game itself seems a bit too much like war 2/sarcraft.

I dislike the unit cap of 90, although it requires more strategy it takes away the ability to stockpile men and go full frontal, which I like to do sometimes.

I also really enjoy the RPG aspect they incorportated into the games with the heroes and special items.

It's a definite buy for me, I've been playing Warcraft since the beginning and this is a very nice release from Blizzard.

<< << When is the actual release of this game scheduled? >>

i think around late June of this year
>>

i think you mean june of 2006

90 unit limit for all races?? It should be a different limit (some ratio for more limited multiplayer games) for each race depending on the overall strength of the race.

I'm a fake beta tester, here's some things me and my friends have noticed:

-my friend thinks the 90 unit cap will be higher in the real game. Now i think they just want people to play quick games and look at some technical things instead of having too much fun

-the archmage for the humans can make this water elementals. at high levels they can kick a little TOO much ass.

i'd have to ask my friend for more info, because im not a pro at the game like he is, but i will definately be buying it when it comes out because it's soooo amazing.

anything lower then 1024x768 makes for unreadable text and ugly as ass graphics🙂

elven archerers sound like lucy lawless(xena).. omg did they have her read? *fap fap fap* 🙂

remember you can click on units repeatedly to piss em off and hear some interesting things🙂 those naughty ppl at blizzard crack me up🙂

I didn't get in on the beta, but have played two games via the "unofficial beta release" a friend has. Those two games were enough to sell me on this game. I can't wait till it is in stores.
