While you're correct that it's not likely, do compare and contrast the vote totals in the House and Senate for certifying the presidential election. (e.g. the vote on the objection to the PA votes failed 138/282 in the House and 7/92 in the Senate. There are simply more nutjobs in the House.)

House members tend to be more afraid of being primaried by someone even nuttier than they are. Its the problem with so many very safe districts due to gerrymandering. The biggest threat to your seat in the house is from the base of the party.

Yeah, I'm *all* for having his eligibility for office stripped for good and sufficient reason, but even if the Senate trial fizzles out - he'll hopefully be facing jail time or have fled the country.

It matters because the obvious goal here is to permanently bar him from holding federal office. The secondary goal was to get his term to end ASAP, but everybody knew that was at best a longshot.

Now that's a thought worth ruminating over. Four years of Trump doing what he does best: making things harder and harder for the minority Repubs in Congress to get things done their collective lock step way, which is the old preferred way rather than Trump's way, which is his way or no way. You know, sort'a like McConnell's way just a whole lot stupider and humiliating.

If the articles are there the Senate can vote for him never being able to hold public office again.
This needs only a simple majority.
