(CNN) -- At a recent neighborhood meeting in Birmingham, Alabama Congresswoman Terri Sewell said the harsh anti-immigrant law promoted and signed by Gov. Robert Bentley is embarrassing Alabama in the eyes of the nation.

Funny how republicans see their world through the eyes of the 1960's. Today is a new world, and more so a new America. Well... new when compared to 1960.

So I take it you don't think there should be any limits on immigration? Don't cry that there's no money for first-world standard education and social services anymore. We can't import tens of millions of third-worlders and magically generate enough revenues to pay for the services they and their children consume.

Bah, the illegals weren't hurting anything, they just do what US citizens won't do. What we should do is walk around the fields and factories where the illegals work and sign them up for visas and SSNs, on the spot. That way we can at least make sure they're paying their taxes. Maybe have a year of "illegal alien amnesty" where they can all come in and get cards and we can get them on the proper rolls.

Really? It doesn't help solve the problem with illegals getting paid under the table and avoiding taxes? It doesn't give rights to immigrants allowing them to legally pay into the system and in turn getting the benefits from it? It doesn't provide peace of mind to those immigrants, thereby making them more likely to stay in one place and build a life there? It doesn't save money in INS investigations and deportations? It doesn't stop this type of insane bat-shit crazy legislation that punishes businesses, consumers, and the immigrants themselves?

Tell me, do you actually ever try and think these types of things through before opening your mouth? Just curious. :colbert:

No, it doesn't solve anything, because as long as the border remains porous, any amnesty type program will simply result in an even higher influx of new illegal immigrants. Remember back in 1986 they tried the amnesty bit. I'm all for it if the borders are closed, but as long as they remain open there's no point. You're punishing those who choose to take the correct steps to gain legal residence, while rewarding those who illegally cross the borders.

You have to pick one. Either bitch about anti-illegal immigration or bitch about there being no jobs. Because of people like you.. modern day slavery is perpetuated and the value of your work is reduced severely. If there are tens of millions of people willing to work for slave wages under the table and send half that money out of the country... and people would rather nothing be done about it... then I imagine OWS will go on for decades.

A few days ago I was watching a youtube video about farmers in Alabama trying to hire people to pick tomatoes. A couple of phrases stuck in my head, but one "really" stood out.

The owner of the fields said "some of the people out here make $75 - $100 a day, if you work hard you can make that kind of money to".

With his choice of words "if you work hard, you can make that kind of money to" tells me the guy is used to talking to very low wage workers. $75 - $100 for 8 or 10 hours of work is dirt cheap wages.

The people working the fields are busting their buts for less then $10 an hour. It someone is going to be working a physically demanding job, they need to be making more like $20 an hour, not $8 an hour.
 
First of all, those new laws in AZ and AL are against ILLEGAL immigrants, not LEGAL, let get it straight.

Secondly, why even bother to have immigration law if we don't enforce it?

Thirdly, if ILLEGAL immigration is such a good thing, why other developed countries such as Australia, Canada, EU, ect. are not embracing it?

Exactly. People complain that illegals do work that Americans don't want to do. The problem isn't with Americans not wanting to work. The problem is that the market has been so distorted by a flood of cheap labor that nobody wants to pay a decent wage.

This is true, but there are sections of the law that are an embarrassment for our state. See the open letters to our legislature/governor that were signed by many of our religious leaders for a few examples.

The church loves illegals as they are what keep the local churches in business. In a time where many of their traditional parishioners are not attending church anymore, the church finds the illegals suitable replacements. Hence why they offer them protection and shelter.

One of those meat packing plants in the mid-west that was busted by ICE reopened employing the local citizens and paying more per hour. Go figure!

Teens here where I live can't even get part time jobs at fast food joints due to all the illegals working in them... Why? Because they may pay the illegals the same as the teen, but the immigrant is not going to bitch about their schedules or other on the job issues for fear of reprisal.

People who support illegal immigration and open borders also support the exploitation of these immigrants. The irony.
