I wasn't able to access it yesterday evening :( Thanks to the new and stupid UK online safety act, no doubt.

It's not that the UK has blocked Imgur, it's that Imgur has geoblocked the UK!

I mean the end result is the same. Imgur posts only ever worked about 50% of the time for me anyway so while I'm not that happy about the general situation the specific Imgur situation doesn't bother me so much.

Pretty much. Some people don't want to send their ID to random companies and some companies get that.

I remember when I was a kid having to wait until I was 19 here before I ever saw porn. Those were tough times....

just in case..... /S

I'm thinking of signing up to Mozilla VPN to get my memes fix as well as *cough* other content elsewhere.

I'm also thinking that I might waste less time each day by not having access to imgur, but I also suspect I'd find another way to waste it.

25 states have done the same thing with porn. I'm guessing the VPN providers are pretty thrilled with the program.
Who do you think funds these laws? When you want to understand why a law is passed, ask yourself "who makes money from it"? Sure, the fundamentalist religions (Christian, Muslim, Jewish, etc...) are backing/promoting these laws, but it is guaranteed that VPN providers are spending lobby money to get this passed.

It's kinda the same thing as the child car seat laws. Are they good? Sure. Who funded them? The child car seat manufacturers. To a corporation, there's nothing better than getting a law passed that mandates that people must purchase your product or service.

Why imgur though? Maybe it’s that my main access point to the site is the Hume thread but I don’t see much porn there, just stupid stuff and depressed people.

It's the holy grail of marketing.
It was an easy thing to get passed here in the deep south, Baptists are down on pretty much anything fun. That said, a lot of parents were all for it as well. Back in the first few years of internet porn you had to give someone a credit card number if you wanted to watch.

You misunderstand, these laws are censoring ALL people. No one is targeted. EVERYONE is targeted.
This is how imgur decided to obey the new censorship law.

And why should they? Companies have shown time and time again that they can't keep data secure, and they don't delete data after the reason they temporarily needed it is done, so those breaches are just a huge treasure trove of personal information.

They don't allow porn, but they do allow more edgy memes, that might be construed as "Not safe for children".

Proton VPN might work for you too with their free option? Depends on what your other content is, maybe.

Owing to the human misery porn requires to exist people have a moral duty not to watch it. That should be a matter of personal ethical principle, however and not forced. The number of social phenomena in our culture that depend on human misery include things vastly more indulged in than porn so it shouldn't really demand inordinate attention. The whole of society is basically debased. The greater the self hate the greater the need to diddle the ego.

In the past week or so my VPN sent me this email talking about how they are talking about banning VPNs.

We Never Do This, But...

You know us. We don't usually email you asking for favors. But today is different.

September 25 is the global VPN Day of Action. Right now, lawmakers worldwide are seriously talking about banning VPNs. Not limiting features. Not adding restrictions. Straight up banning them.

That would mean less privacy, less access, and more censorship for millions of people worldwide. It is reckless, dangerous, and exactly the kind of bad idea that spreads fast if no one pushes back.

Here's what you can do:
Go to DefendVPNs.com and sign the petition.

It takes 20 seconds. Then you can get back to streaming, scrolling, or whatever it is you do online.

We will go back to our usual programming after this. Promise.

Take Action: Sign the Petition

My quandary continues.

So I've been without a solid source of memes since the law came in*, which has an upside and a downside. The upside is that I think I've been more productive, the downside is that while I've wasted less time browsing memes and such, I think I've wasted a (not huge) portion of that freed up time mindlessly browsing for stuff to buy.

I'm not a hugely impulsive buyer, so I haven't ended up in a big mess or anything, but I am mildly concerned by it.

* - though I find it interesting that I can still find porn without any issue whatsoever, but Imgur is Super Bad, according to gov.uk.

MS games seems to be doing it by default, sees a VPN and you can't load your game until you turn it off. It's not a 100&, but pretty damn close. Not really worried about them, I'm sure MS has everything it wants to know about me already.

Anything the Brits want to do is fine with me. I even support the idea that they burn down the White House as they'd done during the War of 1812. After the ballroom is completed, that is.

This is gonna affect me indirectly. I am ALWAYS online via VPN, just because. And this shit means that the powers that be is going to be targeting VPN providers next. And that is gonna suck.
