News Imgur blocked in UK

Imgur now appears to be blocked in the UK

It was working yesterday when I checked it, so I assume this is very recent, but trying to access the website now just brings up a generic looking page that says "error":"Content not available in your region." As soon as I turn on a VPN, it's accessible again, so I assume it's related to my...

It's not that the UK has blocked Imgur, it's that Imgur has geoblocked the UK!

I mean the end result is the same. Imgur posts only ever worked about 50% of the time for me anyway so while I'm not that happy about the general situation the specific Imgur situation doesn't bother me so much.

I'm thinking of signing up to Mozilla VPN to get my memes fix as well as *cough* other content elsewhere.

I'm also thinking that I might waste less time each day by not having access to imgur, but I also suspect I'd find another way to waste it.

Who do you think funds these laws? When you want to understand why a law is passed, ask yourself "who makes money from it"? Sure, the fundamentalist religions (Christian, Muslim, Jewish, etc...) are backing/promoting these laws, but it is guaranteed that VPN providers are spending lobby money to get this passed.

It's kinda the same thing as the child car seat laws. Are they good? Sure. Who funded them? The child car seat manufacturers. To a corporation, there's nothing better than getting a law passed that mandates that people must purchase your product or service.

It's the holy grail of marketing.
It was an easy thing to get passed here in the deep south, Baptists are down on pretty much anything fun. That said, a lot of parents were all for it as well. Back in the first few years of internet porn you had to give someone a credit card number if you wanted to watch.

You misunderstand, these laws are censoring ALL people. No one is targeted. EVERYONE is targeted.

And why should they? Companies have shown time and time again that they can't keep data secure, and they don't delete data after the reason they temporarily needed it is done, so those breaches are just a huge treasure trove of personal information.

They don't allow porn, but they do allow more edgy memes, that might be construed as "Not safe for children".

Proton VPN might work for you too with their free option? Depends on what your other content is, maybe.

Owing to the human misery porn requires to exist people have a moral duty not to watch it. That should be a matter of personal ethical principle, however and not forced. The number of social phenomena in our culture that depend on human misery include things vastly more indulged in than porn so it shouldn't really demand inordinate attention. The whole of society is basically debased. The greater the self hate the greater the need to diddle the ego.
