He is (was) Sarkozy's main political opponent for the next French presidential election so it's possible. I have read that with this guy out of the way Sarkozy is a shoe-in since the Socialist party was the main opposition to Sarkozy and this has not only stained Strauss-Kahn but his party too. I'm not French nor do I live there so I don't really know what the sentiment is and I'd rather not subscribe to theories like that without further proof.

This was my first thought as well... It seems extremely unlikely that this guy would risk all of this for something that would so obviously be tracked back to him
