I was reading this article:

And I think that the x800xl lays a pretty clear smack down, the fact that it is 512 doesn't really matter much according to anandtech.

Another recent article where an XL hands it to an Ultra in Far Cry

Not quite all the time, but you get the idea. Looking at the date of Tom's, I am guessing some pretty good driver optimisations have occured in the last 8 months or so ;)

I hate Toms, by the way :)

Well, either we are both right or both wrong. I guess its just like everything else. It depends on which review sites we quote. Every single one shows different results using different platforms and different driver versions. Really quite frustrating to get a good handle on what is what.

Yes, but like just edited, I think that drivers have come a long way for ATI and far cry by looking at those graphs... and who knows what driver settings some sites use. I like the ones that leave everything at default, as that is most easily replicated.

I agree, it can be difficult to get a good handle on it, if only Anandtech had a good bench of this, I can't believe they don't! I looked but didn't see one...

Huh? Mock you? Never have and defended you a few times because you are right (mostly over in news when the Intel fanboys go bonkers). You misread my meaning and sorry if it was not that clear.
"Vain's link" I've been called VAIN as a mock too many times, of course it may have just been a simple spelling error. I apologize.

Smackdown only in the highass res and AA turned all the way up.., not much of a smackdown...

It goes toe-to-toe with an ultra, in those applications, which is at least a $100 more and where the 6800GT typically oc's too, and that isn't taking into account the extra mhz you could get out of the XL too.

Smack down? Too strong, yes. But I get argumentitive and start to exagerate, so I apologize :)

I do think overall the 6800GT is a better card. But at 70 bucks more than the XL, it makes it difficult to say that it's worth the 70 bucks.

Thank you for the help. With my needs and budget the hightech X800 XL at new egg was best. May wait for a price drop with the new tech. recently released.
Again thank you.

Great choice, I love my X800 XL.
Make sure to check the hot deals forum. These last few weeks (following the release of the nvidia 7800 cards) have seen some great deals on the x800 and x850 cards. I think I saw an X850 XT PE PCI-e for like $285 after questionable rebate and an X800 XT PE AGP refurb for like $230 (!!) at the ATI store. Those cards are faster than both the XL and the GT.

Ditto. Check out the X800XT PE deal. Almost makes me wish I had an AGP board just so I could justify getting in on that deal.
