I'm within my evga step up should I 7800gt to 7900gtx

I have an EVGA 7800GT CO about a month old. I am playing FEAR right now and I notice with full AA and higher detail settings that this card does have a little trouble. Is it worth using the upgrade option through EVGA and getting a 7900GTX? It would cost me about $185 more. Are these cards going to be available fairly soon?

Well a 7900GTX should smoke it, but i would get a superclock GT instead, much cheaper... also have you tried the lastest forceware? BIG Fear increases

I'm with Frostwake on this. If you are only seeing a little bit of trouble at times, the GT Superclocked should clear it up for half the price of the GTX. However, if money isn't the big concern, go for the gusto and upgrade to the GTX. Either way, the Step-Up program is too good of a deal for anyone to pass up if it's available to you.

I decided to step up to the 7900GT instead of the GT CO or GT CO Superclocked because it will make it easier if I ever go SLI to match with other brands having reference speed.

And also I might go SFF, so I want the 85watt power draw that the 7800GT is supposed to have. The oc'd ones wont draw that little..

I figure either go standard GT or jump all the way up to the GTX.

So 7900gt superclocked would cost me about $30 vs 7900gtx = $185. Is the 7900gt superclocked enough of a difference over my 7800gt CO (stock) to use up my upgrade? It looks like the 7900gt superclocked is pretty close to the 7900gtx stock, is that the assumption?

no...just go for the $30 7900gt, which runs about the speed of 7800gtx 512mb.. for $30, its well worth it.

if you are willing to OC, buy the normal 7900GT, to get the CO is costs $20 more which is almost enough to buy an NV Silencer. with that, you should be able to hit GTX speeds easily. the GT and GTX are the exact same card but with different coolers.

I'd definately step up to 7900GT 550/1580 model or the $30 extra one you were speaking of.

I have middle of the road cards, either go low end and stick with low power consumption.. or go low end and OC it with a silencer and run GTX speeds.. or jump all the way to the GTX.

Evga makes free money on the GT OC and GT OC Superclocked versions, they do warranty the OC but its nearly guaranteed anyway. Thats why they do it.
$20-50 free extra cash is a lot to eVGA per card for nothing! They know the failure rate isnt going to be any higher on those cards.. they test those OC speeds intensively.

Heck you could flash your normal GT to a OC or OC Super if you wanted too. Or put a silencer on a GT and flash to a GTX.
I'll be running stock on a reference speed GT. Low power consumption and still "playing with the big boys". Ready for SFF if I wish. :thumbsup:
