Well, yes and no. You'd be surprised how computerized these performances are. I'm sure the drummer was wearing an ear-piece with a click track telling him where the "beat" is. He is the one who is supposed to start the rest of the band, so he was probably just playing what was in his ear.

The other possibility was that the vocal track had drums mixed in and he was just miming the first few bars (until he started playing live).

Simpson made some exaggerated hopping dance moves, then walked off the stage 35 seconds into the performance. NBC quickly cut to a commercial.

I can provide a really high quality rip of the messup if it's wanted. Would just need Rossman to host. :)

I don't think she sings that bad, I kinda like her voice. I wouldn't say she's an "amazing" singer, but good enough to listen to. I like the song "Shadow" by her (supposedly written by her too?). And on AOL they have "Sessions @ AOL" where they have bands sing live, exclusive to AOL members I guess, pretty good stuff. She went on there, and I'd say I'm at least 99% sure she was singing all the songs she sang indeed live, and was not lip-syncing, and did a pretty good job, voice didn't crack, etc.

Who knows why she chose to lip-sync this song, pretty embarassing though.

Also, I feel pretty certain that at least a few of you saying "she sucks", or "the worst music evar", haven't probably listened to a whole song of hers from start to finish, or if you have, it's been one song at best.

Have you seen her show on MTV? She CAN NOT sing. They had her in the recording studio and even her dad was shaking his head at how bad she was

I remember seeing something where she had acid reflux or something, and was damaging her vocal cords, so she was having trouble singing. But I'll reiterate about the Sessions @ AOL thing, where I know she sang live, and I think she sounded(I know that's not right, what would I replace it with?) good, of course that's entirely my opinion. There are many reasons to lipsync..... if she was having trouble with her voice that night, she could just pull a Britney Spears and lipsync and still have the show go on. I don't know why so many of you are relishing in her misfortune though. I guess it makes you feel good about yourself when something bad happens to others that generally seem more fortunate than you?

No, why would I want her life? Cameras in my face all the time? Having to sing what the people in the head office want me to sing? I relish in it because it shows how she truly is. She goes around wearing a "Punk" shirt and dying her hair black to differentiate herself from her older sister, yet if it weren't for Jessica, no one would know who the fvck Ashlee Simpson was. She's just another manufactured female artist, and I think there are enough of those already.

I believe she wrote a fair share of what's on her album, so I wouldn't say that's exactly what the people in the head office want her to sing, otherwise she'd sing other pre-made stuff. A lot that has to do with her image is imposed upon her by her label, since her image is a large part of what sells her brand. Not to mention she HAS to be different from her sister or there would be very little to no interest in what she has to offer. And how do you know "how she truly is"? I'm sure you've done extensive research watching every snippet that's ever aired about her on TV, radio, etc., to form a valid opinion on who she really is as a person. Also, I'll agree that because her older sister came before her, that it's very likely that had a large part to do with her being noticed. Though that doesn't have anything to do with her level of talent necessarily. Look at the Michael Jackson family..... the same can be said for Janet Jackson, but most people don't say "she's only famous cuz of Michael", just look at Latoya, and all the other people in the family that never reached the same level of fame, or anywhere near it.

from ashleesimpsonmusic.com, her official website,
Here's how it works- from a professional sound engineer
10/25/2004 11:00:20 AM - by plus4db

The audio engineer has a cd or a lap top with the "track" on it along with a "click track" for the band to play to. The click will play for 4 or 8 beats so the drummer can count in with the band. The click can only be heard by the band in their monitors. There is no music on the "front end" of the track, so the band could NOT know that it was the wrong track, unless the two songs were of greatly varied tempo. The click plays throughout the entire song so the band can keep time. It used to be that monitors were big speakers sitting on the floor on stage, but with the use of in-ear monitors, no one can hear it and you can usually get away with this sort of thing. The band could not have known there was a problem until the vocal track started. It was the sound guys mistake, but Ashlee Simpsons problem. Let this be a lesson to her! Technology only does what we tell it to do. It can't make you an artist.
