I usually like getting the lastest, but i'm just not ready for it. I'm perfectly pleased with upconverted dvds for the time being.
 
That's great if you're not hyped for either of the new HD formats because you can save yourself a nice $1000-2000 for a player/burner. The format wars are still going strong although I read an article about some guy who wanted to bridge the gap between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD and create a universal player.
 
Considering my primary display for probably the next three years will be a 19" LCD, I don't give a sh!t about any HD right now.
 
I'm with you. While I really am into electonics, for movies I usually make the switch when I absolutely have to. Just got my first DVD player 1.5 years ago (that includes all computer purchases). When HD-DVD is <$50 for a player, I'll get it. Blu-Ray will never last that long.

:thumbsup:. I just helped my family friends buy a 63" plasma TV, and when they asked about if they should get Blu-Ray or HD-DVD now, I said wait. There's no point in investing at least $500 to have it be obsolete in a year.

That's what I have. I'm in the same boat as the OP. I've watched HD movies on it before and they look good, but not enough for me to run out and buy into the next technology.

I LOVE HD for sports however.
 
I just bought a Panasonic Plasma HDTV, and I have a Panasonic progressive scan DVD player hooked up to it. I can definitely notice a slight difference between HD movies on, say, HBO and my DVDs, but frankly I'm not crazy about replacing my 250+ DVD collection just yet.
 
Im going to get the 42" Sony A10 next month, looking forward to it. But I agree, I don't think I'll spring for a HD-DVD or Blue ray player yet, sticking with up-converting until prices are mainstream.
 
HD-DVD and Blu-Ray doesn't look all that much better than Upverted DVD video though..... Its not worth the money for me. 😕
 
I read an article that sort of said not many people were really that excited about either of these technologies because they didn't really offer much that was new. The change from VHS/cassettes to DVDs/CDs was pretty huge because there were huge tangibles that all consumers could immediately see, like ease of finding songs/scenes and the medium didn't quickly start falling apart. Not to mention DVDs are rarely 'eaten' by the player. The article made a compelling case, regarding that this medium is going to be more expensive and not offer a lot to your average user. It got into the fact several 'new' features already exist in DVD format, they just aren't used. It also talked about how early adopters are starting to get burned out on false promises and techs that are heavily hyped but never take off.

I know I don't give a crap, but I don't think of myself as an early adopter so thats no surprise. The medium seems expensive, and as a pretty casual movie watcher I'm perfectly happy with DVDs and what they offer.
 
Obviously the folks in this thread aren't part of the target demographic. That doesn't make the technology useless.

A big :roll: to anybody that says upconverting looks even remotely close to a true HD image. If you're sitting further than 2x the diagonal of the screen for movies, you need to move the couch closer. I see far too many people buy a small HDTV and then sit 15 feet away and then complain about how HD looks just like their DVDs.

I bought a betamax machine in the middle of that war and won't make that mistake again.
 
I'm with the OP on this but for a different reason.

I think my DVDs already look a little 'too' good. I prefer the more grainy look of original film anyway and just what am I really gaining by moving up to HD DVD? I already think my DVDs look better than the theater picture on 99% of the movies I own so just how much different are these things going to look once I throw in a HD-DVD?
 
Lets see..... pay lots of money to get one format player when there is a format war going on, not knowing which one will end up on top. Then, with the new format (whichever one you pick), you'll be saddled with a great big load of DRM junk. Wonderful.

No thank you, I'm usually on the cutting edge when it comes to electronics and PC stuff, but I think I'm pretty content with my HDTV, upconverting DVD player and regular DVD's. They can wait a loooong time for me to throw away lots of money on DRM junk.

Who said the technology was useless? Several people just said it wouldn't benefit them. And while ATOT does hate everything...if a tech forum isn't even excited about new technology on a large scale, imagine what the general population thinks.
