Who said the technology was useless? Several people just said it wouldn't benefit them. And while ATOT does hate everything...if a tech forum isn't even excited about new technology on a large scale, imagine what the general population thinks.

Exactly. I'm all over tech stuff but this just doesn't do it for me. Also, what will this new technology do for older movies? Just how much better can a movie like 'Top Gun' look than it already does in the current DVD format?

At least when DVD players came out it wasn't a choice between two formats like it is with this.

I'm in no rush to buy all over again my collection of DVD's.

I'm not either, because I've been following tech advances for 20 years now, and they're all the same:

1) New wiz-bang product announced that will revolutionize everything
2) Said product is delayed
3) Said product get a competitor with a different way to go about doing the same thing
4) Both products are delayed again as one side tries to outdo the other
5) Products are introduced at a price that only an idiot would pay
6) 18 months after that, the device is on sale at Wal-Mart for $39.95
7) Process repeats

Yeah, I'm a bit jaded.

It's kinda hard to justify paying $500+ for an HD format player when there are only a handful of titles out there.

I am perfectly happy with a wide screen projector and regulr DVD's. Although my dad has an HDTV and I really love watching the HD channels like the discovery channel, it looks incredible. I have no desire to jump on the HD DVD bandwagon, I'm good with the way things are for another 5+ years.

Thats different. I mean, everyone knew that wasn't going to work right from the beginning so it didn't really even count. :p

I'll wait till the format war die over - just need to look at my Beta vcr tapes to remind myself not to commit.

I'm perfectly content with plain vanilla DVDs, and at this point have no intention of buying either format until I'm given good reason to do so.

Thats the thing that sort of makes me laugh at sony. They're betting that the playstation will sell blu-ray. Are they sure they're not just killing the playstation? Because that sure looks like what they're doing.

I bought a DVD player right when they came out. DIVX was still a contender. Woth every penny. I remember being in awe when you could spot painted backgrounds since the resolution was so good.

I'm not going to risk it this time but I do think it's going to be nice with 50GB per disk. The problem I have is that DL disks haven't even become cost effective so what hope do we have for 50GB disks? It'll probably end up being 25GB SL disks and that's not as exciting.

Not enough people have HDTV's for it to take off. That has to be the first step, otherwise neither format (whichever comes out ahead) will really go anywhere. And right now HDTV's just cost too damn much for 99% of the population. Most people are content with what they have, and when HDTV's become affordable (for the masses) then it will take off. Till then, most people don't give a sh!t.

wrong, this year hdtv sales surpassed sdtv sales. and the sales are and have been growing each year. its inevitable. but they totally screwed up by starting a format war. i mean many of us are hyped on hd, on a good set the difference is just undeniable, but now we can't jump into hd formats without risk, so thats a bummer thats gonna keep many people away for a couple years. time to stop buying dvds thats for sure, people gotta dry up their income until they get their act together. use netflix or something, yes i know..they get a cut, but its not as much.

Got a link for that? I'm not saying it's wrong it's just surprising.

But regardless, consider all the people who aren't buying TVs at all. I'm sure more than two-thirds of households still have only SDTVs.

The HDTV and movie markets will feed off each other. Many people have been holding off on purchasing a new television until more HD content was available. Well, here's your content (movies) - what a perfect reason to get an HDTV.

The HDTV market has been increasing 20-30% every year since 2000 and will only increase faster now that HD movies are available. As volume increases, prices will come down, which will further increase volume, will bring down prices more, etc, etc. You get the picture.:)

Feb 17, 2009...SD TVs will need a set top box...assuming cable companies stop broadcasting their analog signal. Will the High Definition DVD format take off then? Or before? Everyone will be looking for a new TV (or box, which I hate), so they will want content to utlize their new technology?

Since moving into my new home, I haven't had cable TV (or satellite) service turned on. Just using OTA HDTV and am very pleased. Close enough to get a clear signal on each of the local channels without moving the antenna (just a cheap $20 indoor antenna, too).

If the PS3 comes in under $600, I might get one to play the games and have the bonus of a Blu-ray player. The last game system I bought was the Sega Genesis, so I am overdue :p

The main reason both have flopped isn't the price of the players or the DVDs. Both camps failed in delivering the best that either format could provide. According to reviewers quite a number of the Blu-Ray discs are terribly mastered and don't look any better than the standard DVD release. That coupled with a problem that the only Blu-Ray player currently available had with a denoise chip has led to a pretty dismal start for Blu-Ray. HD-DVD has fared somewhat better, but some of their discs suffer from similar picture quality problems as well as volume levels varying greatly from disc to disc. Both camps have rushed to market without being ready possibly fearing that delaying would cost them market share. There is a niche market for higher quality video, but by the time they manage to get these straightened out there will probably already be something better.

Comparing the HD-DVD vs. BR format war with DVD vs. Divx is a bit off... there was never a "format war" in the case of DVD/Divx. Anyone could see DIVX was doomed from the start, and nobody in their right mind would've invested in it. Anyone in the rest of the world, that is, not in the U.S....
