Same for Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2.. those are actually working on Vista or just installed for looks?

Like I've said before, these all work. They wouldn't be on the list if they didn't. With Theif 1 and 2 they had to be installed on VMWare Windows XP and then the files / registry settings copied over to Vista. After that I had to apply a patch that sets the affinity to one core or else the game would lock up after starting it.

Dungeon Keeper 1 runs great with DOSBox. Easy one there. Dungeon Keeper 2 runs nativly in Windows and actually allows widescreen and 32-bit color support by hacking the registry settings (no mod).

Whoa whoa whoa..

DOSBox? Thats not playing on Vista64. Thats playing on an emulator under vista64. BIG difference there.

For those questioning the old games running I can attest to Vista being STELLAR in this area.
My kid have a pile of old cheap stupid games that NEVER worked under XP. tossed them on VIsta and they all run flawlessly.

OP... that's amazing.

The same can be said about old DirectX games. Vista emulates functionality.

I highly doubt most of those games that require DOSBox would work under XP either so it's really a moot point.

sorry, no, thats faulty logic. Dosbox is a separate download that has nothing to do at all with microsoft or vista that allows you to play games. Thats like saying you can play all your windows games right in linux.. because you can use vmware and load up a windows image.. thats not playing in linux then, thats playing in windows.

vista isnt emulating anything--its how directx was created. Vista is merely hosting the dosbox program.. big whup..

Tell us how you really feel why doncha? Your logic is a bit faulty. I wouldn't really comapre DOSBox to VMWare. DOSBox is an all inclusive emulator. You don't install DOSBox and install an old version of DOS onto it.

While I don't really care about the argument, your comment is false. Vista isn't "emulating? anything, it's running legacy DX games natively through Direct3D 9Ex.

This is unlike DosBOX which runs a virtual environment on top of Windows in order to emulate DOS.

I suppose what I said previously was more Vista FUD that was spread around. There are plenty of articles like this that have been passed around. Searching for Vista DirectX "emulation layer" in Google returns several results.

Wow that's just... wow. That's a lot of games.

Regarding HW on a 32" LCD, haven't done that, but I have played Homeworld 1 (and 2) at 1280x720 on my 52" projection TV, though. :D

If its like my Samsung 32", its running at 1360 x 768 resolution.

I often like to run my PC games on the LCD TV, with the sound going through my amp to my hi-fi speakers. Awesome!

But I wouldn't really want to do everyday stuff like office and web surfing on there at that resolution, which is why I've also got a 22" Samsung LCD monitor. ;)

how does the original Unreal Tournament play?

I can't get it to play properly on my e8400 with vista 64 ultimate. It starts up fine, seems fine until you start playing. then every few seconds it speed up to like 1000% speed increase, then slows to normal then bursts to super speed again. Impossible to play like that.

I got The Sims in early 2000 before the game became stupid popular. I may get KOTOR2, but I'm not too keen on getting an unfinished game.

You have to enable vsync in the video driver control panel and disable it through in game preferences. Hit tilde "~" and type in preferences. Go to Direct3D and turn vsync to off there. It sounds odd, but it works.

Like I said before, Vista has a version of DX9.0 installed alongside DX10 specifically for the purpose of running legacy DX applications. DX10 can't even run legacy DX applications.

If there was emulation involved the performance hit to games would be massive.

Thanks a lot AdamK47! disabling vsync in the games control panel fixed it. The only thing is, now I get a lot of lag while playing! lol If it ain't one thing it's another. Now I will be running along, and instead of the game jumping into turbo mode, it hesitates for a fraction of a second once in a while while playing. :|

The Witcher, Medieval II, Medieval II Kingdoms, and Flashback have been installed.
