I'm thinking about getting a cat...

anyone have any suggestions for things I should know while I'm still in the "thinking about it" phase?

I grew up with dogs, but have never really had a pet of my own before.

get a plant first. if you can keep it alive, then move up to a fish. if you can keep the fish alive, then go ahead and get a cat

getting a cat or a kitten?

the latter is more work than the former. You'll need to litter train it (not that hard), deal with clawing things (assign a scratching post), lots of attention, deal with hairballs, excessive curiosity and lots of playing.

I was thinking about a russian blue kitty, but maybe I should get a fish first 😉

Don't. Cats suck. Cat lovers say they're clean, but they're not. Cats are filthy and disgusting creatures.

I had the cutest orange tabby kitten when I was a kid. She lived 15 years as an outdoor cat. She was more than a pet; she was my friend too. Female orange tabbies are pretty rare.

Fish are harder than cats. Cats are easy.

But with fish you don't care much when they die (although I have a couple of fish that I'd feel pretty sad when they die)

You be wrong. Cats are self-cleaning...like me.

Cats walk through their own crap and pee then jump on your kitchen counter... and you. They are not clean pets.

So many questions leap to mind. But I just don't want to know. [Backs slowly out of thread...] 😛

Dogs are like friends who you've known for a long time; you may fight every now and then, but you remain loyal to each other.

Cats are like your ex-wife/hubby, except they stick around, doing whatever they please, whenever they want, and only come to you when they need something.

Depends entirely on the cat. Different cats have different personalities. I had a cat that was downright bitchy. Wouldn't let you touch her. My uncle took her to his house where she was the only cat, and she became as friendly as you could want. My cats beg for attention, follow me around the house, just like a dog. They're very loyal. One of them loves strangers, one is scared when anyone else comes to the house.

Cats are different. Your generalization is entirely wrong.

I was in your situation, I ended up getting a cat from the local shelter. Worst decision I ever made, at first it was great. We would play, he would cuddle on my lap and it was nice to come home to something living rather than an empty house. After a month is when the trouble started, I suspect it was from me working and him getting bored at home. He would tare into things, garbage, food left on the counters, packages on top of my fridge anything he pleased. Then came up the upkeep, taking him to the vet, cleaning the litter box, etc. Don't get me wrong, I like cats but it wasn't for me. Just keep these things in mind when considering.

Keep in mind how much people will be around, esp with kittens. They usually want lots of attention. If you are going to be gone alot I would get 2 so they can entertain eachother. Brother/sister combos usually work well

It boggles to mind to consider how someone can have a weak enough grasp of biology to make that statement with a straight face. Cats are fairly clean even just compared to other domestic pets, much less the entire animal kingdom. Why you have this irrational phobia of them is difficult to comprehend. I can't think of any animal which I dislike enough to lie to myself about.

You'd prefer dogs, who eat their own crap and vomit then lick your face?

Don't be ridiculous.

Cats are awesome. I think the main reason people dislike them is because cats aren't as dumb as dogs and don't like you just because they depend on you. It takes more than that for a cat to become loyal to you.

Don't get me wrong, I love dogs as well, but in my experience they just haven't been at all as smart as cats.

Yes, you are right, I was generalizing. Yes, I am most definitely wrong too.

I don't know what it is, but I've got something against cats. Maybe it's 'cause I can't help but compare them to b!tchy women.

Wow I'm getting a pixie bob asap.

I love cats and they are very versatile; we have 4 cats (mother and 3 from her litter) that were indoor/outdoor cats for about 5 years. Got tired of shedding and minor allergies so we leave them outside with only the garage door open for them and they are healthier, and happier than they've ever been. The father was a main my excellent compatriot and the mother we are not sure of. They are all very very social and will literally jump into your arms if you pat your thighs towards them.. follow you around the yard and are friends with all the neighbors that walk around.

I wish the mother were a my excellent compatriot also however, they would all be very large and very beautiful.
