I'm thinking about a new car around $30k - NEED YOUR INPUT!

My last week of college and I'm out to work in the real world! What are the upcoming cars in 2003? I kinda want a 4 door and 6-cyl (4 is ok too if its turbocharged) car, 6-speed, and it has to be moddable. So far, I've looked at the infiniti G35 6-sp, the Lancer evo7 and WRX STi, toyota matrix 6sp, altima 3.5, lexus is300, gs300, and gs430. Anyone have any experience with these cars?

Where did you get to see these cars?

online web sites 😀

g35 here

I didn't the sti and evo7 in person cuz it doesn't exist in the US yet, but car&track or motor trend had a comparison of those two a couple months back. I did see someone drive a G35 around town though and it looked SWEET.

The Chrysler 300M is a nice car and has pretty good reviews, take a test drive for one. They also have the 300M Special out now that has a slightly massages computer, lowered a little, stiffer suspension, different steering ratio, dual exhaust, etc. Its pretty sweet

No one knows if Subaru will be bringing the STi over or not... it's still up in the air. And in the US we'll probably get the EvoVIII instead of the VII because Mitsu probably won't federalize the VII when the VIII is already in the works. In either case, they will both probably be over $30k for a few months. Personally I'd go with the STi if it comes over, but the Evo will probably have better dynamics and the G35 will have better luxury. For modding, tough call, but I'd go with the STi.

the g35 is a nice one, but it's way over 30k right?
the evo 7 will be here, however the hp will somewhat be limited (definitely less than that of japan version). hopefully it can be modded
the sti, no definite words on that yet
the is300, it's 5 speed not 6 speed
the g300 and gs400, they don't have stick on these cars.... and unless you get a used one, i don't think they are close to 30k
the altima 3.5 se is a good one, though the interior is so-so
the toyota matrix... umm..... i don't buy it
the acura cl type s, not sure if it will still be here in 03, plus it's only 2 doors
the acura tl type s, will be redesigned for 04 (available in march 03), probably 3.5L, and maybe 6 speed as well
the nissan maxima, nice 6 speed if you can stand the look

from his first msg i got the impression that he's considering japanese imports?

VW Passat would be my choice.. or teh VW Jetta VR6.

Personally of those list of cars I would take the WRX, IS300 and the Infinity G35.. however look into BMW's.. you can get a sweet deal on a 330i

Audi A4 1.8t with a new chip?

I wouldn't get the lancer evo7 or the WRX. I don't think they'll make the impression that you want when you show up to work. 🙂 Sides, I don't like em much. The Matrix is just not in this class. The IS300 is nice, have you thought about the ES? The GS is past your budget.

I suppose it doesn't matter much but you'd be my hero if you got the Lancer Evo 7 🙂

Also, two cars conspicuously absent from your list are the smooth-driving Acura CL and the ultra-sexy SC430

Out of college into the real world? Unless you're a richie, do yourself a favor and buy a car on the cheap. A 30,000 dollar car for a poor out of college kid in this economy is not a good thing.

I saw the EvoVII and I forget if I saw the STi, I think I just passed over that one. Saw em at a car show, the Jacob Javit Center one time.

what do you mean? I thought getting a car worth 3/4 of your income for the year was a good thing 😉

A WRX modded with about 6 grand of parts to meet your 30k mark will outrun most cars. And yes, STI parts are readily available (expensive. however)....also there are plenty of custom subaru tuners out there.

I'd go for the IS300 hands down. I want that car so bad 🙂 If you want something more moddable, definitely the WRX STI.
