I'm the villian... I'm taking advantage of Frys

I don't think it's that wrong to do what he's doing if he returns the brand new one he gets from newegg to frys.
Frys still gets the brand new shrink wrapped product returned. Yeah they have to have a guy to put it back on the shelf and do the transaction.
But still, it is illogical for them to not return all of the tax.

IF that's what he did I wouldn't have a problem with it but clearly that wasnt his intentions

So normally I would let crappy customer service go but this is just plain stupid when a company won't change outdated policies. So here's my story,

I purchased a video card last week at the Fry's in Fremont, CA and used it as a stopgap until my order from newegg arrives. Today I try to return the video card, but I decided to go to the Santa Clara Fry's since it was closer to where I was. I ended up paying 8.75% tax at the Fremont Fry's, but when I tried to return it in Santa Clara, I was only getting back 8.25%. Now I know it's not much of a difference, but being in the retail business I know that it's right to give a customer the exact amount he paid for an item.

After some arguing with the manager, he still refused to adjust my tax rate. I told him then that what if I proceeded to buy several high dollar items (say cpu processors) from Santa Clara and return them at Fremont, would I get the higher tax rate (and therefore make money) on the return. He was dumbfounded at that argument and could only say "yes if that's what you choose to do". Buahahah, lol. Yes he is stupid though then agian I think it may be of a "I dunno" type thing.

I don't know if he's the only dumb manager there or if he just didn't know policy, but I'm so tempted right now to buy like 10 AMD FX cpu's and return the same day. I know it's petty, but I can be a petty SOB when it comes to companies trying to screw over thier customer. I was thinking.. isn't there a Fry's in Oregon with no state tax? Hmm.. it would be quite profitable then if someone wanted to run a little operation to snake Fry's out of money.

Anyways.. I just needed a rant..

Cliff's
1. Bought VidCard w/ 8.75% tax rate
2. Fry's wanted to return w/ 8.25% rate
3. Argued I could make money off them
4. Dumbfounded manager
5. Profit???

Funny, didn't know frys had a policy like this.. Hm. Well I guess you found a little loop hole didn't you? If you care about the company, report it to them, otherwise just keep hush hush about it.. Sure what you'd be doing is immoral so if you care, tell the company, if you don't, then do what you'd normally have done..

I've found many "loop holes" like this many times in my life and you will learn quickly that if you point it out on anandtech, you'll be flamed and be called an "idiot", but because the majority on here fail to express what they truely mean, it only leaves the OP to be dumbfounded and results in a flamefest, much like the one in this thread. I believe the people responding with "idiot" are really trying to say is, "you douche"...

I dont know why all of you are flamming him. Havent you ever bought something, found a better deal, returned it and got the other one? Or have you bought something and figured out it wasnt right for you and return it? He needed a card for his comp to run while he was waiting for his real card. He should get his money back for what he purchased and doesnt want anymore.

Btw when Fry's resells stuff that was returned they take a VERY small amount off the original price. Ive seen from as low as 5 cents on a keyboard to 3 dollars on a used video card.

No because everybody on this forum are self righteous, holier than thou type people.. When in reality, they do this themselves and are simply trying to set an example and if they were to tell people this then it wouldn't work..

but typically when you find better deals within 30 days you just take your recipt and they price match it, or if you havent OPENED the thing, you can return it.

key here is he OPENED and USED the thing KNOWING he was going to return it.

For you guys defending the OP, its the fact that he is ranting big time and considering creating a thread about losing ~$1 (well lets see $0.25 for returning a X300 card, or $1.75 for a 7800GT). Although he lost a dollar, he came out a winner for pulling it off and able to return it at a closer location.

I mean I know some of you do the same thing too abusing the return policy. How many of you bought a playstation from Walmart so you can swap the defective one you had and return it (or the one you tried to modify yourself but instead fried the mobo). Or some of you say ahh let me download/borrow this album in MP3 format and see if I like it, and if I do I will buy the album and delete my mp3z. Screw that, most of those MP3s are heading straight to your Ipod.

So its not just the ethical thing, its jus him for being a cheap bastard with no patience. What he did to actually borrow something for only 3 days, I wouldn't even consider worth it, as he wasted time and money on gas, but hey whatever floats his boat.

BTW, Of course I don't do any of the above 😀

Wow...

Just wow...

You ARE a jerk if you do that. Your post sounds sarcastic so I'm sure you don't care, but this is one case where I wish they would have charged you a restocking fee on top of shortchanging your few $ sales tax.

MSDNAA version here. Totally legal. 🙂 Not sure what that has to do with this situation though.

Actually they are suppoed to modify the return so that you get back all the tax you paid for it. At least that what we used to do when I worked at Best Buy like 10 years ago someone bought something at a store in a differet tax area.

But most places have automated receipts and such now that calculate that automatically.

If what you are doing is % 100 legal than go for it PERIOD and profit??? No! e (profit???)^(infinity)
I remember the historic (or at least that's how I like to call it) Best Buy's memory fiasco, yes I legally made $ 800 of BB from 5 different locations (friends were very willing to screw them too 😉) and gave away BB coupons everywhere even to strangers.

Don't like it flame away, now why did I do it ?

Well :

1- BB screwed me over lots of times, like with their policy about a purchase that was a bit over $ 2000 for home equipment and what not via their hidden unannounced secret policies that I wasn't notified about until they were sure it was too late for me to change mind about the purchase.
They had the option of making an exception due to their own error.
But NO they didn't they noticed that there was a chance to make more money out of me and they WENT FOR IT AND RAPED MY WALLET AND PATIENCE WITH NO MERCY!!!

2- Of course easy money is sweet. Oh wait it wasn't easy money!
Every time I picked a couple of memory sticks the Store Manager / MOD would have me wait for two continuous hours just standing there, even though he just got off the phone with the corporate office and I heard them on my own speaker phone saying GIVE HIM THE MEMORY IMMEDIATELY!

PS : I called on the mofo and went as high on the management ladder as possible and YES I got him fired, why ? Well he broke the law (BB's law) too many times with me and he had it coming to him.

3- due to the above 2 points I was relentless with the memory fiasco I fvcked them hard and I LOVED IT!!!!!

I don't understand this society, you are an asshole if you follow the law and your an asshole if you don't 😕

Then would I be a asshole / pervert if I had consensual sexual relationship with girl that is one day far from being 18 or am I a asshole / pervert if I let her wait a day or what ?

Take your pick people either people are cool for breaking the law or they are cool if they don't, both conditions can't be satisfied at the same time!

Stop pushing your double standards on others.

I CAN go to a store like Fry's or BB and tell them in their face that I AM BUYING THIS VIDEO CARD BECAUSE I AM WAITING ON FVKING NEWEGG'S LAME UPS SHIPPING SERVICE TO GET ME MY CARD AND I WILL RETURN YOUR'S ONCE I GET THE NEWEGG ONE, and no they can't do sht about it.

idiot.

QFT.

For SokaMoka's edification I'll answer his question:
"I don't understand this society, you are an asshole if you follow the law and your an asshole if you don't"

Companies have INCREDIBLY liberal return policies these days. They don't have to do that. People who ABUSE the return policies provide a disincentive for companies to offer such liberal return policies. Some companies are already tightening their policies due to abuse (i.e. by implementing restocking fees). The trend will continue in that direction as long as assholes like you continue to abuse the policies. When companies determine that the benefit of having a customer-friendly return policy does not outweigh the cost of having it, you'll only be able to return an item because it's defective.

Nope, running an OEM copy of Windows XP Pro ($145)

thatguyant, I suggest you crawl far far away before the flaming does any more damage to your skin, people like you are the reason we have demonic stores like Best Buy with horrible business practices that victimize only the honest customers (like the guy paying with $2 bills).

I commend thatguyant for amending his position and accepting fault. We can stop dog piling on him now.

EDIT: stan394 and mugs, yes you may be correct as the OP seems bitter after the tonuge lashing he's received but there's enough of an apology for me to say I shall bump this thread no more forever!

Ok, that was lame. Where's the next thread?

Wrong, most likely the store has a right to refuse service and if not when you return the merchandise you can be subject to their returns policy which includes this line; 5. Product that is returned incomplete, damaged, or has been used -- if accepted -- will require a deduction. This deduction is final.

So I've already edited my thread and you guys still seem to not get enough. For people who are insisting I should be banned... well that's your opinion and thank god you're not a moderator.

Next time I'll go ahead and keep my mouth shut. I was trying to warn people who might have to return something and didn't check their receipts. So like I said before.. let this thread die... everyone on Off-Topic should be proud of themselves and for those who found it right to insult and flame me... well I hope you got a little satisfaction out of your day at someone elses sake.

Doesn't sound like he thinks he did anything wrong, sounds like he just realized he was owned by OT.
