I'm the villian... I'm taking advantage of Frys

Read below if you want to see my initial post. Hav fun =o)

I purchased a video card last week at the Fry's in Fremont, CA and used it as a stopgap until my order from newegg arrives.
Just be glad that places like this let you have loaner cards.

So normally I would let crappy customer service go but this is just plain stupid when a company won't change outdated policies. So here's my story,

I purchased a video card last week at the Fry's in Fremont, CA and used it as a stopgap until my order from newegg arrives. Today I try to return the video card, but I decided to go to the Santa Clara Fry's since it was closer to where I was. I ended up paying 8.75% tax at the Fremont Fry's, but when I tried to return it in Santa Clara, I was only getting back 8.25%. Now I know it's not much of a difference, but being in the retail business I know that it's right to give a customer the exact amount he paid for an item.

After some arguing with the manager, he still refused to adjust my tax rate. I told him then that what if I proceeded to buy several high dollar items (say cpu processors) from Santa Clara and return them at Fremont, would I get the higher tax rate (and therefore make money) on the return. He was dumbfounded at that argument and could only say "yes if that's what you choose to do".

I don't know if he's the only dumb manager there or if he just didn't know policy, but I'm so tempted right now to buy like 10 AMD FX cpu's and return the same day. I know it's petty, but I can be a petty SOB when it comes to companies trying to screw over thier customer. I was thinking.. isn't there a Fry's in Oregon with no state tax? Hmm.. it would be quite profitable then if someone wanted to run a little operation to snake Fry's out of money.

Anyways.. I just needed a rant..

Cliff's
1. Bought VidCard w/ 8.75% tax rate
2. Fry's wanted to return w/ 8.25% rate
3. Argued I could make money off them
4. Dumbfounded manager
5. Profit???

I dont even have to read the rest.

Your an idiot

i dont know if thast illegal, (which im almost certain it is), its also unethical.

as to your situation, suck up the loose dollar.

How am I an idiot? My vidcard dies so I need a replacement. There's no where in the policy that says I need to keep my purchase. I kept everything in mint condition and only used it for 3 days. It was a ****** card anyways so I just wanted my money back.

They should've charged you a 20% restocking fee. :|

Once you've used it, it's not a new card. They're losing money on the deal because now they have to sell it as open box and will get less for it. You've effectively stolen the difference between the value of a new part and the value of the used part that you returned.

Just because you can rationalise it in your own mind doesn't make it right.

Does Fry's look like a library to you? Should have charged you a 15% restocking fee. People like you cause higher prices.

Fry's will sell it as open box but they won't discount it initially. it will be regular price for weeks.

So I'm getting responses that I'm being an arse for arguing over this. Okay I'll take that. So what if the scenario were that I purchased a defective piece of merchandise. They still won't give you the money back. How is this practice still not questionable when it comes to merchandise that doesn't work?

You exchange it since you obviously bought the piece in the first place for a reason.

I dont know why all of you are flamming him. Havent you ever bought something, found a better deal, returned it and got the other one? Or have you bought something and figured out it wasnt right for you and return it? He needed a card for his comp to run while he was waiting for his real card. He should get his money back for what he purchased and doesnt want anymore.

Btw when Fry's resells stuff that was returned they take a VERY small amount off the original price. Ive seen from as low as 5 cents on a keyboard to 3 dollars on a used video card.

You couldn't go without for three days? So buying a lousy card is justification/rationalization for wanting your money back? That's pathetic! You don't know why you're an idiot? Part of the answer lies in the fact that you had to ask.

In this case, I feel that buying with the intent to return is an abuse of a store's return policy.

Okay..

So I figured that maybe someone would like to know about Fry's return policies and practices, but I guess everyone here is morally correct, has never committed a sin, and therefore judge a consumer.

So I now agree that i have

1. caused all prices in fry's to go up because I chose to follow their written return policy
2. an arse for puchasing an item, but choose to go with another item that suited me better and just wanting the money i paid for it
3. causing the entire retail world to lose their balance because I am the only customer that returns things to fry's open and i am to blame for all those "open box" stickers.

I'm sorry for bringing this up to everyone attention, whether you agree with what you did or not, I was only trying to help others to might be put in the same situation. What if you bought a 500 ipod that broke in a week and you just wanted your money back for the item you paid.

sorry sorry sorry.. let this thread die please

btw here is the link to fry's return policy. I feel like I have followed in every way, but that's your opinion.

return policy

Buying something with the intent you had is borderline theft IMO.

Consider the 1/2 a percent to be a cheap rental fee, & next time don't be a douche & abuse retail return policies. They are not in the business to loan out their inventory to morons like you.

Their return policy is meaningless, you purhased the card with the absolutely no intent to keep it. There is no way for a retailer to allow returns while covering themselves from people like you, but that doesn't mean you should think it's OK to take advantage of them.

Viper GTS

The point is you are buying a product with no intention of keeping it. Thats called renting. You should be charged a rental fee, similar to blockbuster. Typical retailers charge in the neighborhood of 15%, something you did not get charged. You should feel lucky. Prick.

So you think it is okay for you to screw Fry's out the the difference between a new and used video card..but you are indignant when they re-imburse your sales tax at a different rate based on where the store is???

Absolutely astounding. You sir are just one step below a thief.

you are a idiot. you buy somthing with the plans on returning it a few days latter? man wish they would have hit yoiu with a 20% restocking fee.

you buy with the intent of returning it 3 days later. that's the bottom line. no matter how right you are with the returning policy, you are abusing the system. that's the bottom line.
