I'm such an effin' idiot. Fare well, my dearest love....

I got into the amazing world of cast iron pan 3~ years ago after hearing about it here in ATOT.

So I bought this beautiful cast iron pan. It's about 14"~, perfect for everyday anything. I fell in love with this thing. I even told my GF to NEVER touch it, fearing for her further misuse of leaving it in water, trying to wash it, etc. Strangely enough, a good cast iron is hard to find. This one is all-iron clad with no wooden handles or flimsy parts. You can broil it in the oven without problems.

I've done so many wonderful things with it. It's heavy- at least 10 lbs, retains heat too well (I can't touch it even after meal is done), and versatile for cooking anything. I've cooked steaks on it, which comes out better than grilling:

I've made paella on it, which is amazing as it holds the food warm for the whole party until done. I've even made corn bread... Over the many years, it's built up this thick coat of oil over the use by all different cuisine. It is my #1 kitchen buddy.

And I fvcked it all up. Just like that. Today. I had these frozen hamburgers that I wanted to separate. Because I didn't want to thaw via microwave and damage the meat, I decided to smash it hard against the countertop. And the patties were stuck dead-on and wouldn't budge. Then I thought, "Nothing can beat this 10 lb, cast iron pan" and used it to smash the frozen meat. Three times, as hard as I could. The made very loud thwanging and clanging that echoed through the apartments.

The patties still didn't break. But something did.... my beautiful pan. The center cracked through five different directions. Oh my god, my heart ached all over my body. I was left stunned at my sheer stupidity.

I almost shed a tear... jesus christ, I'm dumb as shiet. Good bye my love....

LOL owned

random: how the fuck do you clean cast iron pans then?

You scrape off any excess food pieces. Then just heat the thing until the coat is liquid again. Wipe off further crap. Done. It's sterile.

damn never heard of them cracking. the ones i own are old. my grandmother said she had them for as long as she can remember (i got them when she passed away). i beat the hell out of them too.

My grandmother has one from when she was a little girl, she has promised to pass it down to me when she stop cooking, can't wait.

Not to add insult to injury, or death in this case, but a butter knife forced (or hammered) between the patties works wonders....right down the middle is enough to get them apart.

Know the feeling about people ruining your seasoned cast iron pans. Dish soap? Really?!?

Lodge. Overall decent cast iron cheap.

Other then that, hit some thrift stores. As long as it is not cracked a cast iron skillet can be salvaged from any condition with a little knowledge and a some elbow grease.
