Most "popular" craft beers still taste like piss to me. I'd rather save on the calories than drink a Sam Adams "craft" beer.

I'm as big a beer snob as they come, but Sam Adams does have some good beers, particularly their seasonals.

When I go someplace and they only have bud, coors, etc on tap I just end up not drinking. Even if they have something okay in a bottle I usually skip is as I can get bottles myself for 1/3rd the cost. If I'm out I want draft beer. However most people I know who are beer drinkers enjoy the craft brews I introduce them too even if they won't buy it for themselves.

Ah beer snobs! About as pretentious as one can get about something nobody gives a fuck about. You're right up there with food snobs. Oh, please tell me how much better you are than me because you refuse to drink Bud Light out of some need for self worth.

I personally don't like how much of the micro-brew movement went towards IPAs and hopping your brains out. I much prefer red ale or a bock over a hop attack.

I have also noticed this. I enjoy IPAs and bitter foods, coffees etc.... But it just got ridiculous as it quickly became a contest as to who could hop their beers more. No more flavor balance, just hops on tops of hops. I still like IPAs, just ones that are more balanced and not a hop explosion.

I blame the popularity of Blue Moon.

Uh. Seriously? You blame a White Ale on the hop explosion in the craft beer industry? Jees ...

The industry is starting to trend away from hoppy beers - there's a lot of requests for more sessionable beers, Belgian-style beers, and wild fermentation. But, it takes awhile for the market to shift - and IPA's will remain popular, just like the Pale Ale.

I found what makes crappy beer interesting is to add some Anchovie paste to the beer. It brings out the beers natural flavors and elevates the palate!!

That's when I pull out the anchovie paste....

My Roommate's an uber beer snob. While I do like nice beers, I laugh when he turns his nose up at me drinking Red Stripe while he sips on some $11 a bottle ultra craft beer I've never even heard of he had to drive 30 miles to get. It usually has some over the top name and a retarded wanna be artsy label. Sorry, I don't want to drink Sweaty Dog Piss IPA kthxbai.

Wow. I can't fathom what you drink, then. Let me guess, either all wild's or extremely hoppy beer?

I don't get how anyone can shit on Sam Adams - they're almost single-handedly responsible for keeping the craft beer industry afloat during the hop shortage. While Boston Lager might not be a great beer, a lot of their seasonals, imperial series, longshot's and such are great.

My guess is he only drinks Westvleteren 12's.

Sam Adams does have some really good beers, though I agree the Boston Lager is not one of them. Their summer and octoberfest are always good choices IMO.

I dont care what anyone drinks but Im not going to apologize for having good taste. You want to drink bud light and make it your first choice, go ahead. Hell I'll even drink bud light if thats the only thing around and I won't put on pretentious airs if a friend of mine offers it to me in his house; I'll thankfully accept it. But if there are better beers for me to choose from, most likely bud light will be last on my list.

The hoppy beers were getting a little absurd. I don't understand how the bitterness and amount of hoppiness translates to a better / more elite beer. There are too many different styles to just paint yourself into a corner like that. I personally love belgian style beers and get some crap from people about it heh.

If it is tasty and a good representation of the style I am all for it.

If by this you mean they are trying for the exact opposite. Blue Moon is a witbier, and those are generally low on the hoppiness.

Yeah that is exactly what I mean. When Blue Moon made it so that just being something other than a pale lager or a fruit beer wasn't enough to "stand out," suddenly these micro-brews started cranking out hoppiness as if that was the only way to claim their legitimateness. Hops became the hipster beard of beer.

I am glad this movement has started to go away and you get more variety with microbrews now. I always tried to support the ones that avoided this trend.

I agree. The Witbiers aren't typically too bitter.....I think I read a long time ago that BlueMoon hits about 17 IBUs...which is pretty mild.

This is a cool chart that shows the styles: (16A on this chart)

http://www.brewersfriend.com/2009/01/24/beer-styles-ibu-chart-graph-bitterness-range/

My favorite beers are still German-style amber lagers. Oktoberfest for its malty character and developed flavor. I typically make 2-3 batches of amber lager throughout the year just to drink and make 10 gallons of Oktoberfest in March for a party in the Fall. My favorite hops profile is 1oz of Hallertaur for bittering and 1oz of Tettnanger for aroma. Just about everyone that drinks it goes back for more so I try not to mess with it. The last thing I want to do is have more reasons to drink (when no one else drinks my beer).

Daemn.....Sam Adams always has nice beers......
Personally when I purchase a 6 pack I usually pick something that I have never drank before.....currently I am going through the beers that Seirra Nevada has out the seasonal ones.....but to clean the palate -- it`s always Sam Adams!!

They were never "bought" - they've always been MillerCoors. You're right, you're not a beer snob - you're just ignorant. Same for anyone who shits on people who drink "lesser" beer and feel the need to put people down.

Thanks for reiterating my already stated lack of beer knowledge. I agree that harassing people about their beer choice is silly, but for something that can be as eclectic as beer people sure do limit themselves and their choices. Thankfully the craft movement did take off and now we have all sorts of lovely choices to drink.

There is still nothing quite like slumming it on a summer day with my yuengling.

There is nothing wrong with that. But look at some of the responses in this thread. I mean seriously, some of these guys are going to cut off family members because they enjoy a pale lager on a hot day (which is something a lot of craft beers fail at).

Except, being from IL, you should already enjoy something like Honker's (before they were bought) on a hot day! There are plenty of lagers from microbreweries that exist - hell, some are even in cans.

I like good beer as much as any beer snob but still find a ice cold can of modelo enjoyable while i mow my lawn on a hot summer day.

Exactly, sometimes I don't feel like having a heavy beer, I'll drink Dos XX or even Corona. Sometimes a light beer just hits the spot. It's that same mentality that people have that if it's popular, it must not be good.
