I'm sorry Mrs. Jones, your son Timmy failed math

I think BookIt is still around. Up here they also have the Tesoro Gallons For Grades program. Something like 3 gallons of gas for every A, 2 for every B.

I just don't believe the school should be in the business of raising my kids. They are there to learn.

I think it's idiotic to think that these two things are mutually exclusive.

Sure they are.

Schools exist to teach reading, writing, math, science, etc, etc, etc..... Their job is not to teach my kids right from wrong, instill in them a sense of self worth or etc... along those lines. It is my responsibility as a parent to teach them those things.

So rewarding a child for good marks with a free happy meal is a reason to rip on mcdonalds?

jesus you fatass bandwagon hoppers will hate on anything if you're told to.

It is a reason to "rip" on the school system.

No, you're wrong and tfinch2 is right. The primary things taught may be scholastic items, however just by the very nature of teaching a student is taught values, or in other words a part of 'raising' kids. To think that teaching isn't a part of 'raising' kids is indeed, for lack of a better term, idiotic.

You are right; people will hate on McDonald's, unhealthy food, or whatever else is trendy at the moment. As a kid I got those free pan pizzas from Pizza Hut for reading - good thing these bandwagon haters weren't around then.

The parents rewarding the kid is one thing. The school system doing it is quite another. The school system is there to teach, not to act as a nanny or parental replacement.
Wait, what?

Schools shouldn't reward kids for good behavior? Does the same apply to punishing bad behavior? That's a mind bottling concept to me.

'Splain.
Rewarding or punishing my kids is my responsibilty, not the school's.
The way I see it, your way of thinking is too extreme.
Without a system of rewards and punishments, children are then allowed free reign to do as they please without fear of or desire for the consequences, therefore allowing kids to run amok at school and be disruptive. Bullies run free because the school no longer has the right to punish them.
Unless you want every single student to have a parent accompany them all day to enforce behavior, then I suggest you rethink the school's role in raising children. The consequences of such an action reach further than initially thought.

If the kids are being disruptive they can be removed from class, lunch, recess, etc.... However actual punishment should be left up to the parents.

Control issues? Not at all. I just don't believe the school should be in the business of raising my kids. They are there to learn. Like I said, if they are disruptive then remove them from class and call me or my wife.

Someone else asked if my kids are home schooled. They are not. They go to a private school that places more value on actually teaching the kids rather than making sure they have high self esteem or any other of that wrong minded liberal clap trap that schools seem to think they need to be doing these days in place of actually teaching.

Raising my kids to have self esteem, morals, etc...is the responsibility of my wife and I as parents, not the school.
Removal from class/lunch/recess IS punishment. So are grades. Do you grade/promote your child? No, the school does.

Your logic isn't reasonable. I can follow your logic and have problems with what you describe, or basically have problems with the entire school system leading TO the things you dislike about public school.

No red ink or little billy will get his feelings hurt (punishment). No honor classes for little susie since we can't tell her she's doing good (reward) because that also tells everyone else they aren't doing as good (punishment).

One of the things schools should teach is responsibility. That doesn't mean parents shouldn't be doing it because the school does. The problem is more with lazy parents than overzealous schools.

Want proof? Go to your local grocery store. Observe the children where they are with their parents.

We received free Pizza Hut personal pan pizzas for good grades when I was younger. Yum.

wasn't it called the "reading for Pizza" progrm or something like. It ran over the summer and for every 10 or 12 books you read, you got a personal pan pizza or something?

Yep 🙂
