This Bill Entitled "The Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011" Is a Bill with overly broadened language that greatly threatens all of us.
"under language approved 19 to 10 by a House committee, the firm that sells you Internet access would be required to track all of your Internet activity and save it for 18 months, along with your name, the address where you live, your bank account numbers, your credit card numbers, and IP addresses you've been assigned."

yes

considering that lobbyists write the bills, and dirty money now floods in unlimited style...its pretty perverse.

(1) A commercial provider of an electronic communication service shall retain for a period of at least one year a log of the temporarily assigned network addresses the provider assigns to a subscriber to or customer of such service that enables the identification of the corresponding customer or subscriber information under subsection (c)(2) of this section.
Maybe I'm just not fluent in legalese, but that just looks like a requirement to keep a log of IP addresses, and for 1 year rather than 18 months.

But if you're not doing anything wrong...

I really hope you're being sarcastic. There are plenty of things that aren't legally "wrong" that most people would really prefer to keep secret. Going through someone's browser history can reveal private information like sexual orientation, health problems, personal relationships, if they are looking for new employment (current employer could fire them if that becomes public), where they bank, etc.

Even if the government used it ONLY for their stated intention the fact that these huge databases of information about us is worrisome. I think everybody on ATOT knows that computer security is not infallible. Somebody is going to break in to one of these databases and get access to this information. The fact that it is being stored guarantees that at some point it will be compromised.

But if you're not doing anything wrong...
"But all I did was say that [political figure] is an asshole! I wasn't doing anything wrong!"

"The law says that's illegal now, which is why we're arresting you."

The definition of "wrong" can be pretty broad sometimes, and it seems that the government is continually trying to extend its reach. And of course, since it's now legal to detain US citizens indefinitely, let's hope that no one accidentally trips over an arbitrary line that someone in power has drawn.

Yeah well. This will pass, as will SOPA/PIPA/etc. They'll just wait a few months until everyone's more distracted with the presidential campaign, maybe reword the laws slightly, then tag them in as riders with something completely unrelated. We need to show Iran and China that we can censor the Internet even better than they can, so we can win the War on the Internet.
They don't need to care about getting voted out of office either. 1) The wealthy interests decide who gets the most media exposure, effectively picking the pool of candidates from which to choose. 2) Most people will forget about this sort of thing by election time. 3) Many people vote based on a few core issues (praying with sufficient frequency to the correct imaginary friends, abortion, gay rights, warmongering). 4) Incumbents tend to stay in office.

I regret that I have but two middle fingers to show to the US government.

There is no stopping the U.S. heading to a full scale Revolution in itself now at this point.

if they store browsing history , that will reveal personal medical information and that will break hipaa laws. Congress is full of idiots

Well hold on now.

It's not the people for the most part de-evolving.

Let's keep the blame where blame is due.

It's the Corporations and the CEO's of the few that own the Politicians and thus the Country responsible for this.

IMO, people should wake up and realize they need to stop resending the same idiots that have been in congress for the past 50 years.

Some of these people were around when Reagan was president and are trying to rule with a philosophy of their own time period.

So does this mean that my ISP can monitor what I am doing on the internet and suddenly shut down

Just assign everyone a static ip address and be done with it. The government gets the ability to track everyone, conspiracy theorists get their' its the devils number, they want to mark us all' , and the movie industry can stfu about all the not knowing who downloaded what crap. What do we users get ? The shaft of course, but you should be getting used to that by now.

Washington corrupts any morals a person has upon entering, it is a virus that only politicians can get and it infects and takes over within days of taking office.

Watching John Stewart the other day they had a clip about sopa and the people in government talking about it and these people wouldn't know the difference between an email and an IM yet they are deciding technology based bills and they are the intellectual property heads. Look at the FCC , you have people on the board making decisions that are accountants and businessman who don't know a megahertz from the hurtz they get when they fall down 🙂
