I'm running an x800 xl on an AMD 2600 witha gig of ram and I'm getting scores of around 4800. That is including the slight overclock of 40 Mhz on both the core and the memory. Haven't really pushed it more than that.

the guy wants to find an ati card, not why he SHOULDN'T find one...this thread is cluttered with fanboys...
I prefer ATI over Nvidia, but I still think something isn't right there. When I had my 6600GT, the image quality at High Quality was pretty good, and better than X800 quality. I'm just warning him about it. X800 carries a decrease in filtering quality compared to 9800Pro.

Why not wait for the new 80 drivers to be released to fix near all problems?
I dont see the point, 6800GT --> X800 XL?!?

I dont get the logic behind your decision, reckon its more of a waste of time, money and etc.

also 6800gt = x800xl. If you doom3 all day then get the 6800gt, otherwise they're just about the same.

not to talk about the price difference though....o_O

The X800XL is ?slightly? faster than a X850pro ? beyond3d

The difference in filtering quality between the 9800 and X800 is virtually negligible. It?s hard to tell the difference between the cards even when using mipmap tools. In gaming it?s not even close to being an issue. The 6800?s Trilinear in HQ is no better than the Trylinear on the X800?s (at least that was my take when I looked at the mipmap shots in the ixbt review).

The AF on the 6800?s is slightly less angle dependent (depending on what angle you measure it at, but the X800 is better at some angles too -- which may be arguably the better angles to be better on).

Another thing I just noticed about NV?s AF from that ixbt review, is that the higher levels of AF on the 6800 have lower levels of filtering for the mipmaps. Brilinear is moved closer to Bilinear as one switches from 4 -- > 8 -- > 16AF. If you load up the shots here at ixbt, and flip through them sequentially, you?ll see what I mean. Try the colored mipmap shots labeled ?

6800, ANIS 4 APP, opt.
6800, ANIS 8 APP, opt.
6800, ANIS 16 APP, opt.

The mipmap transitions get progressively narrower the more AF you apply. This doesn?t happen on the X800, 9800, or 6800 with opts off. At 16AF, with the opts on, the transition is getting pretty narrow, you aren?t getting a lot better than Bilinear.

wow, I had no idea that the 9800 was in anyway better than the x800 xl on filtering. I just upgraded to the 800xl from a 9800 pro and from what I saw it's been better in everyway. What exactly should I be looking for?

yeah

to the OP

an X800XL is the card thats pitted against the 6800GT, so if you want a ATi card then thats the one to get IMO

the 12pipe pro just doesnt cut it for me

thank you, you have answered my questions....and i thank you :)

thats all i wanted guys, not to go to each others throats with the ati flaming sword of death vs nvidias trident of ice....

I dont get the logic behind your decision, reckon its more of a waste of time, money and etc.

Is that gonna improve DVD playback? Because I read that Nvidia has PureVideo. I just ordered a X700 Pro. (ducks to avoid the flying bullets) ;)

Most probably, its the first multi threaded driver as well.

Go ATI. I switched from ATI to nVidia and totally noticed degraded image quality too and am going back to ATI. ATI and nVidia seem like they have completely different markets for their products.... ati seems to have quality as a goal, nvidia seems to have max speed as a goal. Like and Coke vs Pepsi, if you ask me (ok, ok nobody asked).

I never thought I'd see that on a technology forum. :D

I had a Geforce2 on my HP and when I built this computer I'm using now, I used a Geforce4 Ti4200. One of the reasons I decided to buy an ATI card was partly because of the price. But, I also wanted to try ATI. I was thinking of going back to Nvidia next year when they come out with Geforce8.

Oh well, I might very well get another ATI next year after reading these comments. I'll have to see benchmarks etc before making up my mind though.

I did look at one of the links on the image quality (IQ). You could tell the ATI was showing fine lines in a sharper way. Though, that's just one detail. I kind of liked the colors in one of the screenshots of the Nvidia (even though that article is a little old).

As for the statement, that is utter BS.

If you guys are so IQ sensitive, then just buy a damn Geforce 4 Ti 4600 with its virtually no opted AF.

Use some sort of 3rd party cooling, LN2 etc, OC it to bare inches of its life. And enjoy the undisturbed IQ.

I have a Ti4200 right now. It's still pretty sweet. But it shows Far Cry like a cartoon.

BTW, I didn't know we had a cookie monster here. Here's a cookie. :cookie:

 Cookie is good.

Anyhow, guess it because of the S.M the GF4 is using. 1.4? But its AF is unmatched so far.

If you take away the Af opts lets say a 7800GTX. The IQ becomes improved, and near all objects are filtered (in 16x AF, some objects are at on 2x Af.)

Will you be willing to trade playing games at 1600x1200 2~4xAA 16xAF, to 1600x1200 2~4AA and 4xAF but with no opt AF just like the GF4 series?

So decent IQ decent performance, instead of average IQ real high performance?
