I have family there, and one of my good friends transferred to UNC Charlotte and I get to visit him! I'm really excited!

Look at it this way. The odds of you dying in a car are 1:15,000. The odds of you dying in an airplane are 1:1,000,000. So statistically, you are 66 times as likely to die on your drive to work than on the flight to NC. Did that help?

I flew a Delta prop plane from Idaho to SLC. It was the worst flight of my life. Hopefully yours will be better.

My understanding is that the failure rate on a propeller is less than on a turbine (think of all those moving parts).

This is partially offset by the small plane versus big plane factor.

Anyway, been on one before, still statistically safer than the drive to the airport.

(Great, now you can be scared to drive to the airport.)

Russ, I hate those damn beechcraft! They're so small there's a bump in the aisle for the landing gear! I assume it's for the landing gear anyway. I had one really scary experience with a beechcraft where there was a serious crosswind and lots of turbulence while were coming in for a landing, we were coming in at about a 45 degree angle to the runway, and I could see out the cockpit window from my seat, I was sure we weren't going to make it.

Anyway, I've been on the type of plane that you're going on, TheBlondOne, and they're not all that bad really, but they are loud. Only had bad turbulence once, the girl sitting across the aisle from me had just gotten a cup of tea when the plane dropped a couple hundred feet in the air (at least that's what it felt like), she had just set the tea on the tray...needless to say, tea went everywhere and she was soaked. Sucked for her. Moral of the story: don't get tea.

I take 'em all the time. Noisey. Very noisey. Extremely high vibration. Sounds and feels like it's going to fly apart. No headroom if you are over 5 feet tall. Uncomfortable. Cramped.

On the bright side, they give you a glass of water and a small bag of stale trail mix.

those dorniers are really nice planes..

they are slow.. so it should be fine.. though a tad bit noisy... I have flown in them and they arent that bad compared to other turbo props I have flown in.

That's a 32 passenger plane. I've been on an 18 seater a couple times. They are noisy, and can be a rougher ride, but that depends on conditions same as any flight. My second experience was good, first was stuffy, and landing was kinda rough.

That didn't help much, did it?

My memory of flying in these things includes everything mention, except I also remember smelling the exhaust throughout the entire trip. For me it was rather naseating.

That plane is quite large actually. I have spent quite a few hours in a Meyers OTW (built in 1939) and a Piper J3 Cub. Those are small planes.

I wish I could see the expression on your face when one of the guys loading your luggage sits in the cockpit and announces he is your pilot. Not to mention the long hours they work and the low pay. So look at it this way, the hardware won't be a problem, I would be more concerned about the software.

hehe, that plane looks funny. but seriously, i hate riding in little planes. Its not that i think they are scary, they are just much more rough than a jetliners. That and i'm fairly tall, which tends to not go too well with most turboprops.

I used to work on Turbo prop aircraft.
Prop driven aircraft are actually SAFER.
A "normal" jet is made to be PUSHED through the air. If you loose the engines on one of those, the plane has the glide characteristics of a ROCK.
A prop driven aircraft because it is made to be PULLED through the air, has completely different aerodynamics.
Making it glide MUCH better.

Though this plane may seem scary to you. Believe me, your much safer flying in one of these!

Well, thanks everybody. It's good to know that I won't die on the plane.

However, I'm very worried about the turbulance. I'm a wuss, a really REALLY big wuss. I get scared in regular planes when there's a little bump.

So maybe I should take some drugs to knock me out before I get on.

If you think you might have a panic attack then it might be a good idea... I always get to take a nice nap on planes because the change in air pressure always causes me to pass out. Yay!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with those planes!!!

As long as there's no wind or rain or lightning, or any birds don't hit those thinner windshields you'll have absolutely no problem!!

Actually, if you have a stop somewhere with those guys, absolutely NEVER check your bags, they will definitely go somehwhere that you don't.
