Argh! Here's my first OT rant:

I drove to the video store (a BIG US/Canada chain) and rented Gladiator on DVD for tonight. The wife and I hadn't seen it, so we were really looking forward to it. Stood in line for 20 minutes, only to get up to the counter and have the woman look at me and say in an annoyed voice "You didn't happen to notice that there was supposed to be 2 cases for this movie, did you?". Turns out this DVD comes is a double rental case that is supposed to be attached together and the one I had picked up was broken and was only the one case. I said "No..." and she told me to "Go get it". Fine, I run over and look - only double cases - not the other half of my pair. So I grab a double case copy and run back. "There were only double cases" I say. "No" she says "weren't there any other halves?". "No, I said... "Only doubles." She rolled her eyes and rang it up, handed me the movie on the other side of the security sensors, and I left.

So we have dinner at home, put our little autobot to bed and settle down to watch Gladiator. Only to find that the same store clerk had left the plastic security lock on both cases!!!!

Argh! We cannot open the cases to get the movie out. So we call, my wife gives them heck, and the manager apologizes and tells us to "just break the locks". We try but can't, the plastic parts just snapped off and the locking mechanism stayed put. $#*^&!!!

So they tell us we will get a store credit free rental when we come back, which is a start, but our evening is ruined, its too late to go back (40 minutes in the car round trip). And we are stuck.

So my question for everyone: We will take the store credit, but we think we should also insist that we get to keep the movie an extra evening, since renting it tonight means it is due back tomorrow at midnight. We can go to the rental place in the day to get the locking thing removed, but then if we watched it tomorrow night I would either have to a) drive it back before midnight or b) return it the next day and incur late fees (thus using up that store credit).

So is asking to keep the movie an extra day justified, or is the store credit all we should get? We aren't trying to be greedy, but isn't us keeping the movie an extra day thier way of fixing the situation, and then the free rental is thier way of making up for the mess?

break the freaking seal dude, if they are like the blockbuster, you might have to tear the whole case apart, it is their fault, if they give you hell when you return the bare dvd's tell them your stoy and how pissed they made you, im sure they will understand.

I'm trying to break the dang seal - its just like chipping through plastic, since anything you try to pry just snaps right off!

Argh!

I could cut the cases open, but I'd need to find my utility knife and then I'd worry about hitting the discs. Scissors only dent it!

I'd just take a utility knife to it.

Just slice a big circle around the front of it and pop the movie out.

If not, take a lighter and melt it.

fist thing i'd try is to soften the lock with a hair dryer, being careful to apply heat to the lock only. you could probably shield the case with a wet wrung out towel while you're doing it.
if that fails, i'd go after the lock with a soldering iron, although the resultant fumes might be toxic.

forgot to add: as for that obnoxious sorry excuse of a store clerk, the next time she gives you grief, ask her if she was mad at you personally, then immediatly call the manager over, then ask the clerk what her pay was, then ask the manager if he/she knew that the video store down the street was paying this smart-mouthed clerk twice as much just to work where she is right now, because it surely doesn't make any sense for her to be here any other way. ;)

You're justified in asking to keep the moie an extra night. Blockbuster (or whoever) won't go out of business if they bend over backwards to give you some decent customer service.

If you explain to the manager how far away you live, I'm sure he/she would be willing to let you keep it an extra day.

You are justified in the following actions:

- Keeping the movie an extra night
- Ripping the DVD
- Returning the case with ripped VCDs and keeping the DVD

Damn...if it was me I would demand....

1) Next rental free
2) Keep the movie extra day
3) $20 gift certificate
4) Free popcorn and soda for next rental

There is no excuse for their ignorance.

I think the movie store would laugh at your demand Jim.

Sh1t happens live with it. Come on its a plastic box, cut it open. Its not a Bank Vault ;)

Thanks everyone - I hacked at it with a variety of tools and wound up destroying most of the locks, only to find I couldn't get at the inside part with anything larger than a screwdriver, which didn't work.

Also, they told us not to damage the cases, just the lock. Grrrrrrrrr.

So I gave up and we'll go in there this afternoon.
