You're all confused? It's simple, the guy was just working your away message into the conversation. I do it all the time when i'm bored. Usually mine are a lot shorter, for example, say someone's away message is "TODAY!" for some reason. I'll IM them and say "so when was it you were going to come out of the closet?"
