I got 5k lookin to build the gaming rig to end all gaming rigs, any suggestions?
I was thinking of just going alien ware 😛

Shuttle XPC with custom faceplate

AMD + nforce 3

1GB of RAM

9800XT or whatever

Onboard NFORCE Soundstream Toslink/Optical out to reciever (DD and DTS etc)

BeyondTV PVR software from Snapstream's Beyond TV

WINTV PVR 350 for realtime Mpeg 2 encoding and decoding(snaptream bundle....Softeare, remote and TV card for $229)

8x +/- DVD burner

dell 21'' LCD

Sh!!TY mouse and Sh!!TY keyboard so you don't look like a rich Prick.... $priceless$

That is one crappy configuration to end all gaming rigs...

Try a P4 3.4 Extreme Edition or an FX-53... two 74 GB Raptors in RAID 0... Hitachi's new 400 GB hard drive for storage... 2 GB of low latency PC3200 RAM... 9800 XT... Audigy 2 ZS... nice speaker setup, 5.1 - 7.1 depending on your taste and available space... DVD-+R drive, maybe another 52x CDRW drive... 3.5 inch 7-in-1 media card reader... nice case... nice mouse and keyboard... probably still won't spend $5000 though... I guess if you wanted to get the price up there you could get a Couple Opteron 248's =)

Athlon 64 3400+
ABIT KV8-Max 3
2GB DDR400
4x 74GB Raptor Hard Drives
Radeon 9800 XT
DVD-RW
DVD-ROM
24" Sony GDM-FW900 CRT
Audigy 2
Klipsch 5.1 sound system

just think with all that money spent it will still be only faster on benchmarks and you will probably never see the benefit. i would invest $3500-$4000 and build yourself a nice box for $1000-$1500, it will still kick @$$. your machine might be the sh!t today but in 6 mos it will not be and in 18 mos you will probably have to buy a new m/b to get a newer chip. imo 🙂

I've utilized 1.25GB of memory (which is all I have) in the following fashions....

-Running Linux (it will use all available memory)
-Photoshop 6 + Bryce 4.0
-Photoshop 6 + BF1942
-Bryce 4.0 + BF1942

Yep, except substitute the brand new FX-53 processor, along with a 940 motherboard. And you would never use 2 gigs of ram, unless you are into video editing.

edit: I forgot, since you've got so much money to blow, get yourself a Prometia 2 setup to cool that FX-53, so it can hit 3ghz+!

Haha, it's possible to use 3 or 4 times that much, if you own a good enough digital camera, but what kind of speed difference do you really think that made on either being able to download them or view them?😉

no speed difference... but I was happy when I finally used all my memory for something!

If the dude is spending $5000 on a computer, I don't think he'll mind spending the extra money on RAM he may not need now, but may need in 6-12 months.

what size in MB were the pics?

CRT not LCD(though I secretly fantasize about a 50+" HDTV as Monitor)
Spend some money on Gaming Peripherals: Force Feedback Wheel, Joystick/Throttle, Gamepad

Spend less than $2000 to buy what is still a truly horrendously fast system, and save the rest, or else donate it to charity. 🙂

Everyone here seems to be thinking single cpu. I say go for dual. I've read that more and more games are starting to fully utilize dual cpus.
Dual CPU's, Dual display. That's what a dream machine should have. That is if you want to spend all 5k of it.
OR
I'd say get a top of the line machine for ~2500, and then put the rest into a savings account to use for incremental upgrades.
