I agree! Buy a modest but adequate computer and start investing your money for the long haul.

Wait for PCI-Express and Plextors 12xDVD+R Drive 🙂

I'd seriously consider going with a server motherboard with 64-bit Slots and some SCSI Drives (Doesn't Fujistui(sp?) have a 300GB 15k Drive or something close?) on RAID 5. Don't listen to these nubs 😛

Why waste 5k on something that will be outdated in 5 months? Spend 1.5-2k on a system now, then in the summer spend 3-3.5k on something better.

it's 300g 10k, they also announced a 147g 15k drive :Q

Agreed. You can build a kick @$$ computer for under $2k, and spend or invest the other $3k on something much better.

I'd probably do the same
I am a computer nut, but no PC is worth 5 grand to me.. maybe 1.5 - 2g at the MOST.

Buy an XBOX or/and a PS2 and the games you like.

Return the rest of the money to your parents. (or buy them gifts)
Yep. You owe them more than that.

You'll be happier than spending 5K on a soon-to-be obsolete PC.

I was thinking of just going alien ware 😛

OK first of all. DO NOT GET ANYTHING RIGHT NOW. Got that? Good. Now moving on. The new video cards come out in like 1 month, (hopefully) they will shame current cards, so if you got 5k (****how did you get that much?) to blow, just wait for some of those vider carders.

sorry it took me so long to respond (to my own post 😛) but i decided to follow your advice, im kinda thinking of just spending like 1500 on the system and using the rest on something else or just bank it. But im still akin' to put together an ultimate gaming rig i think i could do it for around 2k 😛
i figure i could do the following...

Athlon 64 3400+ $409
Micro-Star International K8T Neo-FIS2R $135
ZM400B-APS $145
Corsair TwinX1024-3200LLPro $325
Western Digital Serial ATA WD Raptor $287
Western Digital Caviar SE $220
ATI Radeon 9800 XT $419
LiteOn 52X CD-RW $50

I still havent chosen keyboard, mouse, case or screen yet but you guys get the picture, im also prolly going to trim the fat on parts that I really dont need as a gamer 😛
thnx for all your replies i appreciate the advice 😀

Heh, just buy an Alienware/Voodoo computer and there ya go 😉 😛

Anyways, if you wanna build, I'd get something like...

A64 FX-53
Asus SK8V
1GB Registered (Or ECC, whatever the FX needs) PC3200
9800XT
2 74GB Raptors in RAID
SATA storage drive
Audigy ZS
5.1 Klipsch speakers
Plextor 8x DVD-R
Dell 2001FP
Coolermaster Wavemaster

just remember that when you get a chip that is a couple of steps down from the top you will not notice the performance difference unless you benchmark it and the it will be a little bit and you will save quite a bit of $$$$

for ~$110 get a multiformat dvd burner. 86 the cdrw and get one of iteons new 8x dvd+/- rws. i think it is model 812 or something like that.

If you are going to end up spending only 1500, I wouldn't get that setup. I would choose a different mobo and a MUCH less expensive UPS. Also the WD Caviar seems overpriced (although you didn't specify how many gigs). Drop the CD-RW and get a multiformat Burner. I would strongly suggest a 2001fp or 1901 fp since you are getting a 9800xt.

...or change the CRT to a NEC or Samsung low-response LCD. Aside from that, this will make an awesome system. The only other thing I can think of would be a SATA RAID card for the raptors. I don't even know if this will hit $5000, but you'd be hard-pressed to beat the performance by more than 10%, not counting overclocking, even with a FX-53. But FX 5200 for about a month might be good idea, too.

Edit: I'd have a wish list, but Newegg seems to have gone super slow

Edit2: Now Newegg's fine, and it cookied my wishlist fine (I thought), but then emptied it when I tried to save 😕. So anyway...
Enermax CS-10181-B case
Antec TruePower 480 PSU
...Evercase black E4252 and this PSU, or the Antec Sonata are good options as well.
Asus KT800 board supporting PC3200 RAM
Athlon FX-53
4x OCZ 2-2-3-6 512MB
4x 74GB Raptors
Promise 4-port SATA RAID controller supporting RAID 5
Audigy2 ZS
Klipsh 5.1
Lite-on DVD-ROM
Lite-on 8x/4x DVD-RW w/ software (RecordNow! variant, IIRC)
Zalman copper radial flower cooler for socket 754/940 and 478.
Enermax 5.25" multifunction panel
Logitech MX510 mouse
Mitsumi black/gray keyboard (IMO, equivalent in feel to Dell Quietkeys)
GeCube 9200 SE video card (w/ DVI out)
XP Pro
...comes to a bit over $3700, leaving over $1200 for video card and monitor. Get the monitor now. Extremely high-end video cards will be coming out in a month that will blow away what we've got, so hold on for just a little bit.
