I'm psyched!!

I'm anxiously waiting on the UPS truck to bring me my new motherboard, and I've already got a P4 3Ghz processor with 1GB of DDR400 RAM for my new motherboard. I just bought a Western Digital Raptor drive, so hopefully my computer is getting ready to get a big power boost. I know it's nowhere NEAR top of the line stuff, but compared to my current system, it'll be a lot faster.

My current rig is a 1.2Ghz AMD Duron, 512MB of PC2100 RAM, and a WD 160GB PATA drive. Should be a considerable difference. Wish me luck getting it all working.

Yeah, it was a pretty good deal. Honestly, I didn't do enough research before I bought it. I was far enough behind the times that I though a Pentium 4 was the newest out there until it was too late. Oh well, I'll definitely research more next time. I'm really not a very heavy gamer anyway, so extreme performance isn't all-important for me. I'm happy with what I'm getting.

Still not too late to RMA your stuff and get a core 2 duo. Even if your not a heavy gamer, for multitasking purposes dual core makes a HUGE difference.

I upgraded recently to an E6400, 2gb ddr2-800, 965p-ds3, 7950gt ko, all from a 3500 single core and an X800xl agp card. I don't really see much of a difference in desktop performance, but then again, I just read web pages, move files around etc. When I overclock it, well, there's a big difference🙂 Gaming was a monster upgrade.

I agree. Especially if you have any plans on getting vista anytime soon, or even if you just want your new rig to last a decent amount of time. RMA the old and get something good, even a dual core AMD X processor will be much better, P4's weren't anywhere close to top of the line even when they were the newest, AMD had pwned them since the day the P4 was released.

It all came from Tiger Direct, do you think they'd let me return the processor? In the course of troubleshooting the first mobo I had to open both processors and they say no return once opened. If they'll take it back, I may try for a dual core.

Honestly, I don't know because I don't do business with them. And to tell you the truth, If they don't take it back and it was me who made this same mistake - I would go through the trouble of eBay'ing the processor or maybe CraigsList - even if I had to take a small loss on it. Simply because the P4 is very old technology and you can get a lower end Core 2 Duo for probably the same price or very little more then you've already paid.

You'll need to return the ram too. The raptor was a nice buy though. You'll feel if not hear the difference.

Thanks for all your help. I just looked at some Core 2 Duo processors, and what I saw was a little pricey for me. But, then again, I might not be looking in the right places, and it may be worth the difference in price for the extra power. Right now I gotta sleep, cause I haven't slept since yesterday afternoon. But I'll probably start looking for one. While we're talking performance, though, do you think the Raptor drives are a real improvement over older drives. All the reviews say they are, but you seem to know your stuff. Thanks again.

Do you have a Fry's nearby? Cause they give away motherboards with their processors in their combo deals.

Otherwise, you can get a Biostar or Giagbyte MB for ~$100 + ~$180 for an E6300 at Newegg. Memory is expensive right now, there's no way around it, so it'll be about $100 per GB of PC6400 and you'll end up with a 2.8Ghz C2D rig.
